I want everybody here to be able to talk about whatever facet of gun and lethal weapon control you want to, and I think my job as host, is to keep the conversation going, not coming down on people for controversial viewpoints.
When I was in 7th grade they tried to get me for assault with a deadly weapon. I was trying to get a friends attention. After saying his name several times,and no reply, I gently poked him in the leg with a pencil. Could not do shit because I did not draw blood, and he could not remember what leg he was "stabbed". Almost anything can be a deadly weapon.
As is my usual comment; I present the best president we're likely to have had in our lifetime explain the simple things that will someday make gun use much smarter, much safer, much more responsible. Obama had the answer to this complex question years ago...watch and listen;
Videos are problem here. Can you summarise in 5 or so bullet points?
I loved him...so eloquent and made so much sense...I am a gun owner and I agree that as a responsible one, I want others to be safe...we can't even get into discussions anymore without people shutting down...
@Artstan Sure;
-Get over the "we're coming for you guns" -we're not/they're not.
-stop blocking research on gun safety. Many conservative/religious/right-wing are obviously hiding from the inevitable, and the NRA and gun makers obviously paid to block it.
-make gun ownership like car ownership'
-courses required (thousands of vets could have important jobs)
-require insurance; for loss/theft.
-must also insure for user liability, for user and/or victim injury/death.
-require strict registration; regardless of number owned.
-require documentation of rounds (bullets) owned.
-When guns trade ownership; gun must be re-registered...just like cars.
50 years ago, car deaths were higher than today.
No one wanted to wear seat belts.
Air bags were a joke.
Today it's accepted; and despite many million more cars on the road, the per capita death and injury rate is down, and declining.
We have to get used to it if we want the unfettered right to own guns.
This isn't an "if"...it's a when. It must happen. Sooner...or later.
@Robecology This is more or less how it is in Canada and has been for years. We have required the registration of pistols and revolvers since the 1930s. Add to that, control of how firearms can be transported and stored. One cannot just stick a S&W in one's belt and drive off to the range. Also, one cannot hunt with restricted weapons such as handguns. We do not have the insurance requirements nor the specific liability provisions, however.
@Arouet Canada and Canadiens constantly put us to shame. We progressives envy your nation and its' style and laws.
I've come to know Canadian snow birds who own property In my community (Ocean Village, Ft. Pierce, Fl). They're so much smarter, and calmer than our fellow Americans.
Don't you want to consider annexing Florida?
Here's another (almost as absurd) idea; how about you buy the "Protectorate" status of Puerto Rico, and make it a Canadian Province?
@Robecology Thank you for your kind words. We try not to be smug; folks get shot here too on occasion. As for annexing Florida or anywhere else, I think the Imperial banana peel is one we'll not be tempted to step on. Besides, pith helmets and Martini-Enfields are getting impossible to find.
