I just recently re-watched the Bowling for Columbine movie. I had completely forgotten how many good points it had made about gun ownership, the NRA, mass shootings and the culture of fear in the USA.
There is a Southpark style cartoon in the middle of it that gives a brief history of the USA in 3 1/2 minutes. At the risk of grossly oversimplifying and overgeneralizing, I think it still has some good truths to it. I think there's something to be said about the truth of things when you simplify it so that you could explain it to a 7-year-old and this cartoon does that IMHO.
The movie does also make some very good points about the reasons why compared to 22 other high-income nations, the United States' gun-related murder rate is 25 times higher. It points to the culture of fear in this country as well as gun availability. The movie is also available on youtube, in bits and pieces, if you care to work that hard to see it .
Here we are 20 years later with little advancement on gun control.
I meant to post something about this film last night before I went to bed. I'm so glad you posted it here. One of the most upsetting parts to me was watching the NRA rally its supporters in towns where mass shootings had just taken place. Absolutely disgusting.
