I went to a gun shop today and asked what I needed to do to get a gun - in New Zealand. Basically, if I want to give myself one for Christmas, I need to start the process now. It takes a while and is designed to keep guns out of the wrong hands. To get a gun license, you need to apply at the police, with passport photo, the police come and visit your home before they give it to you to see where you plan to store the gun savely, you sit a little test, you need two referees, preferably one of them living with you, one not. Seems to work to a large extend. Death by gun rate here is a about one 10th of that in the States. But still, if you want a gun, and the police don't have an issue with you, you can get one. There are still about 24 guns for every hundred people in the country, that's way more than I thought. The USA has almost 100 guns for 100 people. More than any other place bar yemen, which has just as many. And probaly even more death. But they have a civil war.
