I'm not getting anywhere, I haven't got one ammosexual to give up one single bullet. If I can't convince one of them the error of their ways here and now, how am I going to convince enough in this country to make a difference. I'm trying to get weapons off the streets that should have never been there in the first place. I 'm trying to hone my argument here, and then take it public. I took it down to just one thing, assault weapons, and I'm still not getting anywhere, and people are still dying.
I have one single friend online ( from Pennsylvania) who is totally into the 2nd amendment, or her idea of it , and trump, and a lot of other stuff I find a real worry. She has been getting worse, though I have often taken time to respond to her posts with real information, showing her she got the fake news - that she is so worried about. She has been on my mind a lot ... I don't think I have influenced her much if at all. Some of her "friends" (facebook) are even worse than she is, but I can relate to your frustration. I think you need to think long term.
We can do what we can - need an audience. Marches Saturday.
Insisting on calling them names isn’t a good start. They are people just like us, loved ones we think of as good, caring people, except for that crazy belief they have. They see us exactly the same way. Finding common ground is the key. Something we can both reasonably accept and then building on that. It’s hard to do but important. Thinking of them as delusional idiots doesn’t accomplish anything. They think of us as the same thing, unless we show them we aren’t.
This doesn’t apply to just guns. Trump supporters, anti-choice, etc. Look at how many people have slowly changed their attitude toward gay marriage. Racism and misogyny are, for me, the hardest. I just can't understand how people can believe they are better than others.
Also, as the recent elections in Alabama, West Virginia and Pennsylvania have shown, elections aren’t won by getting the other side to change their minds. It’s by getting our side to the polls in numbers.
Ammosexuals is a joke. For the record, I don't like being called a " bleeding heart liberal". There is no common ground, so far not one has agreed to give up a single bullet. I dropped everything else but assault weapons, and they still won't give a inch. Mass shooting after mass shooting and very little has changed. If regular mass murder doesn't sway them even a little, just what kind of common ground can there be when it's their way or nothing?
Assuming that your opinion is the right one is part of the problem. Rather than treating 2nd amendment advocates like the enemy it would be better to try and see them as allies.
Also most of them just want to use their firearms to protect themselves and their family because the state is unable to do so. So you're essentially asking them to become victims in a dangerous world. To forfeit their lives and the lives of their loved ones.
Gun bans won't save as many lives as you may think. Sure it might eliminate school shootings, but in the process it will create an increase in home invasions, gang violence, police deaths from resistance movements, etc. Taking the guns away will create just as many problems as doing nothing. So it's a big gamble.
It's a gamble with human lives on the line, because criminals will just commit more crimes if they know their prey is unarmed.
Gun bans won't save as many lives as you may think. Sure it might eliminate school shootings. For the umpteenth time that's what I am trying to do. Mass shootings is what I am after, banning guns that should have never been on the street to begin with, and also one of mass shooters favorite weapons. After that I'm not interested in banning anything else. Properly stored I have 0 problem with guns for home protection. Making sure guns don't fall into the wrong hands, and better training, doesn't require any kind ban or registering who has what.
Banning assault weapons will not create an increase in home invasions, gang violence, police deaths from resistance movements, etc.
First, 2nd amendment advocates are wrong in their definition of what it actually says. Any 3rd grade teacher can tell you that. The way we are taught English in school says, all the 2nd amendment says is if you are in a militia you can have a gun. How can we interpret what a 250yr old document says other than by the book. Neither one of us can say they meant it this way or that way, we weren't there. We have to go by the book, by the way we were taught in school. I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH PEOPLE HAVING A GUN FOR HOME PROTECTION, OR TARGET SHOOTING, OR HUNTING, OR ANYTHING ELSE, I JUST DON'T WANT THEM DOING IT WITH RAPID FIRE, HIGH VELOCITY WEAPONS THAT HAVE A DETACHABLE MAGAZINE. THAT'S ALL I'M AFTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! STOP COMING AT ME ABOUT CRIME AND SELF PROTECTION!!!!!!! ALL I WANT TO DO IS REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF MASS MURDERS DONE WITH WEAPONS OF MASS MURDER. The other stuff is in the studies I post, it's not in what I write about, and I'll deal with the best way to do that after this is done. Mass shootings kill the most people so that's the first place to start.
I can agree with your idea but the execution will be very different. The second you allow 1 type of gun to be banned you open the door to the rest of them being banned. Because governments don't want armed citizens, just look at the rest of the world.
Also if it's just school shootings you want to stop then you're basically saying "I don't want 100 kids to die so I'll just put legislation in place that'll lead to the deaths of thousands of law abiding citizens that I don't know".
Also on another note I just found an interesting article whilst looking for something else.
[abc.net.au]
It doesn't support anything I've said but I also don't trust the ABC given what they've done in the past and also knowing who runs them. But you might enjoy reading it.
Also with the 2nd amendment. The malitia are like the minute men, They were formed from people in nearby towns as a means of repelling aggressive forces that would do them and their families harm. That's the difference between the military and a militia, one is full time and the other is a collection of individual citizens with no formal training = civilians.
Also mass shootings kill like 1-2% out of all gun related deaths per year. The main weapon used in the majority of shootings is handguns. So handguns are the real issue.
I personally find that neither of us will agree on anything except for the fact that we want less law abiding citizens and school kids to die from gun violence. So rather than wasting your time and mine I'll just try to comment as little as possible on your posts from now on.
Have a nice day.
@Lancer Why are you so determined to keep access to weapons that civilians should never had access too, to begin with, nobody needs a AR-15 or a AK-47 there are plenty of other guns out there you can use for protection. It's not like 15 people are going to break into your house at the same time.
The ban in 1994 didn't lead to other guns being banned. The people in my group want me to find some middle ground to make a deal with, but I can't do that when your way is the only way. I noticed you are a member of my group so you know what I'm talking about.
Why are you so scared that if you give in just the tiniest bit that all guns will go away. Do you know what it takes to amend the constitution. It' practically impossible, and if it did it would take years to go into effect.
@MikeFlora
As I've said before. I have no say in the matter because I am not an American citizen at the moment.
Also yes you're right. No body needs an AR-15 or an AK-47, but they are legally allowed to own one under the constitution. I don't need a rifle like those above but I do want one because I enjoy shooting different weapons. It's like the difference between driving around a golf GT and a mercedes benz. You don't need a mercedes to get to work but you'd like to have one.
Anyway, all I can say is I agree with you and your goals. But the problem is what comes after.
I've never been able to educate them. The choose to remain ignorant. They cling to it.
I keep fighting though to educate those on the fence. They're the ones that can turn this over.
