It's the wearing or not wearing of masks that, in America, at least, is the polarizing factor. Health care workers are far more cautious and conservative - as they should be. Folk in public who avoid masks often don't recognize the value; and will probably never read this; they're also strong supporters of #Religulous, #Trumpism, ad #Republicanism.
The most important science in this issue is human behavioural science and the signal that you are prepared to comply with what the government AND health officials AND WHO think is best. At this time the best signal is a mask. Not as important perhaps as others but we cannot SEE whether you washed your hands and it is too easy to dismiss or "accidentally" decrease social distancing. IMO islamic women wear. the burqua to signal to all Islamic men around them that they may possibly need protection. Same with any religious symbols but nothing stand out like a burqua or a mask.
@Mcflewster I agree with you about the "signals" conveyed by masks...but I don't concur with the parallel you made with us wearing masks for health and islamic women wearing masks "to signal to all Islamic men around them that they may possibly need protection.
I'm afraid it goes much deeper than that;
There's almost no such thing as a virgin woman in the Islamic culture...
Girls showing any sign of womanhood are "taken" (i.e. raped)...
Women wear them mainly for religious reasons...
But the religious reasons trace back to hiding the attractiveness of the face...
Men there are pretty much out of control....they haven't a clue about a "need for protection".
