I am considering asking Admin to change, on the introductory list of topics within posts the wording of “ ACADEMIC e.g SCIENCE ”, simply because I want everyone to NOT think of science as ACADEMIC (= keep clear) (= I HATE). Do you think that science will always be regarded as ACADEMIC or does it have a chance of being an everyday tool for use by everyone? What do you think?

The heading is Academic (e.g., Science). "e.g." stands for the Latin exempli gratia and means “for example.” So, it is simply giving Science as an example of something that could be considered academic, not an equivalence. Now, I suppose you could have a separate category of Science, but then what would you consider to be Academic, i.e., what would be included under the category Academic that had nothing to do with any kind of science?

I did foresee that problem. So glad I took latin at school instead of woodwork.

IMO, as a retired science teacher (of 45 years), It's not a bad thing to push its' classification as "academic"...

I think it implies that scientific posts are information and/or knowledge-based, and/or fact-based comments.

I would hope that more science posts would include a link to back them up... that's a way to be "academic"....support your POV with references...

thusly;

But science is not about knowledge itself . I have to admit it produces knowledge , but is about the means of producing knowledge and we have to concentrate here at least in not putting anyone off from engaging. There are plenty of science results books, posts , TV and film sources of the products of science. Sorry to be pedantic.

@Mcflewster I never said science is about knowledge itself.

You are, indeed, being pedantic.

Pedantic means "like a pedant," someone who's too concerned with literal accuracy or formality.

Also called "nit-picking"

Schools should teach children to think scientifically about every issue.
