I well remember my first lessons in SURFACE DECONTAMINATIONS EXPERIENCES which is what everybody needs to know in this virus crisis. It means how you wipe all those nasties away regularly to keep your family safe. Of the two contaminants one was chemical and detectable and the other was invisible but extremely tiny.
FIRST EXPERIENCE was in High school when Chemistry had just kicked in and I was happy with sloshing chemicals around not to mention the bad smells. It was only at home after my fun session that I noticed that the tips of some of my fingers had turned very white.
The Cure : The substance in the lesson was phenol also known as phenolic acid a simple aromatic acid . The remedy was of course something alkaline. I have forgotten what I used but there are plenty of alkalis about the home . My fingers were restored to normal next morning, but the experience shook me.
SECOND EXPERIENCE was at university college of Liverpool during my simple Radioactive handling training. Nothing exceptional happened but I remember being petrified handling the scariest substance around in 1959.
CORONA-VIRUS is probably high up on the scary handling list at the moment and will continue to be.
What I learned
1.To understand the material you are handling, living [ that includes mates who dare you to do something new with the material] or none-living.
2. Work tidily and systematically.
3. Have antidote that will restore everything to normal, to hand
4. A new meet-up of unknown cleaning agent with new material can damage the material
5. Don't be scared someone has to do it.
6. Do it often and check.
7. Share experiences like this to educate
8. Sleep well
My wife did not go through these experiences but is better than me at decontamination from bringing up 3 children to adulthood.
