Heartland is a project which my local council...Mid-Ulster, has promoted and my friend Peter Lant who is Education Officer at the council was instrumental in launching. One of the Schools involved, Bellaghy Primary also has as it’s Head, another friend, Mary-Lou Richmond. Both of them sing with me in my choir. Here is a post regarding this Heartland project, I thought it would be nice to have a good news story coming out of Northern Ireland for a change. Bellaghy just incidentally, is where Poet Laureate Seamus Heaney was born and there is a Heritage Visitors Centre there called Seamus Heaney Homeplace.

Excellent project. All schoolchildren should have this kind of involvement in expressing themselves.

Yes...I agree. I’m pleased that my council is promoting this .

Good News indeed. In my day this would have been just mentioned on the timetable as ' History ' and I learned gradually to hate it as a subject and anything with an emphasis on ' just dates '.

As time goes on and more and more

  1. visits to accessible sites
  2. good TV and Film Documentaries
  3. POV books and documents
are produced , then there is nothing I like better especially if it involves topics that I think deeply about.
This seems a novel and co-operative approach which also puts a new spin on it. Well done Headmaster and others.

Yes...I’m really pleased that they are being so innovative and bringing history and literacy together in local context which will really get the children involved and interested. My friends are all great people who are from both sides of the sectarian divide.

Mr Heaney! How marvellous to have that heritage at your back door.

For me Death Of A Naturalist is one of the most descriptive rite of passage poems ever.

I am sure all young boys of a certain age can relate to the frogspawn collection and the ultimate realisation of what you first got is not what you will get when the cycle has completed.

Must go and revisit Mr Heaney. It’s been far too long. Thanks Marion.
