The Mahavishnu Orchestra, an experimental jazz and prog.rock fusion band was formed in the early 1970s by English guitarist John McGlaughlin and was a veritable United Nations of musical talent, the other members included Panamanian, Irish, Czech and USA nationality ....here they perform You Know, You Know on the BBC. I’m not sure of the date, but it was sometime before 1976. Jan Hammer on keyboards went on to compose and perform the Miami Vice theme and soundtrack music a few years later.
This brought back some memories.
Yes...it did for me too.
I listened to this group back-in-the-day, superb. It was one of those groups that made me realize my taste was different that many of my colleagues. I was in the US Air Force and many of my colleagues were lost if you got past top 40, soul (as they called it then) or head-banging metal. This kind of music just did not resonate with them.
Yes...I’ve always been interested in music that is out of the mainstream too. Not to say I don’t like a lot of the top artists and bands and their hit music too...but it gets rather boring listening to the same old music, much of it played constantly on air. John McGlaughlin is a talented and innovative musician who had more vision than most of his contemporaries. I really like the fusion of different cultures and genres that this band experimented with.
I liked them, had one of their early albums.
I did too...they were ahead of their time.
