Because today, 11th November is Armistice or Remembrance Day, let’s listen to this song and think about all those earlier generations who fought and died supposedly in the war to end all wars…and those who subsequently died in the many other wars since.
Lili Marleen…Marlene Dietrich sang it as she says herself, all through the Second World War …it’s the universal soldier’s song, sung for soldiers on all sides in both wars. The song was written originally as a poem in 1915 by Hans Leip, a schoolteacher from Hamburg who had been conscripted into the Imperial German Army and it was later set to music by Norbert Schultze in 1938 and first recorded by Lale Andersen in 1939. Goebbels tried, but failed, to ban it as it was anti-War and therefore anti-German, but the German soldiers loved it and sang it anyway!
Vimy Ridge Canadian War Memorial. Adolf Hitler was so impressed with this that he put a guard around it to protect it.
I hadn't realized Goebbels had tried to ban it. I feel a bit of a sense of satisfaction at his failure.
Yes…a small measure of satisfaction!
