One for @Ray13, @Redheadedgammy, @Beowulfsfriend & @Lauren….and anyone else who has the good taste to appreciate the best male vocalist of the last 40 years, Morten Harket - lead singer and frontman of Norwegian band a-ha - singing Jeg Kjenner Ingen Fremtid from Vogt’s Villa…his 1996 Norwegian language album. Translated into English the title of the song is…
I Don't Know The Future.
Wow, that was really beautiful, and very sultry.
I knew you’d love it too
Yes! Sultry is the right word!!!
This is just beautiful Marje!
Yes…I’ve been listening to many of his Norwegian ones over the past few days…they are just beautiful, even when I can’t understand much of what they’re about….the sound of his voice singing is quite enough to satisfy me.
@Marionville This one is so calming and pleasing to the ear! Doesn’t bother me a bit that I don’t understand the words, Morten is just so great to listen to!
"the best male vocalist of the last 40 years" is a big call. Several tenors and people like Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury and Steven Tylor may disagree.
It’s my opinion…I like many other singers but I believe as far as popular music is concerned nobody can compare in vocal quality and ability to Morten Harket. Trained Operatic singers I put into a completely different category and I’m not making comparisons with them. I realise this is a purely subjective opinion…but as Morten has been voted best European vocalist several times over the years and holds a world record for the longest held note at 20.2 seconds on a-ha’s Summer Moved On in 2000 he is at least as good as any of the singers you named …and it’s my contention that he’s actually better by far than all of them. Only Freddie would be in the category of really outstanding of the group you mentioned because of the power his voice had and his forceful personality as a showman…I loved Freddie too, but his voice was not as versatile nor as extensive in range over almost 5 octaves as Morten Harket’s, nor did Freddie have the unique, effortless ability to transition flawlessly from chest voice to head voice to falsetto in one fluid movement.
@Marionville Fair enough. As each is unique it is unfair to try to grade by comparing is my opinion. So a claim to be "the best" is very open to interpretation. Why art is so wonderful, what tickles your fancy may not tickle mine as rigorously.
I dare say we would both agree Jonny Rotten is not in contention for a mention. Saying that, love the Sex Pistols
@puff My music tastes are extremely diverse…I loved the Sex Pistols too. They were of their time and place in musical history, they were right for that particular time and place! They are not an all time band, not many bands are. Most bands are of a certain era or decade and unless they evolve and diversify and keep making new music…they become antiques stuck in a time warp, touring for decades with the same material makes them a relic act…sounding worse each year as the lead singer’s voice deteriorates and he can’t hit the high notes anymore. That is sad, even sadder when people are prepared to pay exorbitant amounts of money to see wrinkled septuagenarians perform as shadows of their former selves.. I find it embarrassing to watch those once great artists…perform on TV, at least I haven’t paid top dollar to see them embarrass themselves. Many bands also change personnel many times over the years too…some have cast lists of band members that run into well over a dozen, lead singers so nondescript vocally that they appear indistinguishable from each other and other band members so run of the mill that guitarists and drummers are apparently interchangeable. Only very few bands sound really distinctive when not playing their well known hits, even fewer vocalists are instantly recognisable after hearing only one or two notes sung, and around a handful of bands or solo artists sound better live than they do on their recordings. Morten Harket and a-ha are amongst those rarities, that’s why I call him and them the best of the best.
Nice gentle music.
Yes…I love to listen to his Norwegian songs…many of them are beautifully melodic.
