I noticed a lack of bongos in other posts of Cuban music. I don't know the origin of this (below) but I liked his virtuosity:
Love this,I am partial to Cuban musicc and the culture. Would love to add on my playlist. Wasit onyoutube? How can I find it, if so?
Enjoy this video where even if you can't understand the language... you will see how the instruments interact in a Salsa Band... exclusive Rhytmn Section... Timbal, Congas (quinto & tumbador), Bongo and cowbell. The bongo play around the rhytmn.
I have only listened to one but already I am captivated. I am a beginner bongo player, but I would love to learn conga. I can see from the video how the teacher is using what I might describe as a Martillo on the conga, and I may soon have the opportunity to have a go. I start a music course on 10 September, which will be a group of no ore than 10, led by a jazz bass player. He will work with whatever talent (or not) turns up on the 10th, and we will put on a performance at the end of the academic year. I am hooked on the conga, thanks to you @GipsyOfNewSpain
@Red_Cat I will try to post more stuff... you are never late or old to learn new stuff. If you get into congas... get yourself a "Tumbador"... a larger Conga with a Bass Sound... and a "Quinto" a Main Conga with a Sharper sound and slightly smaller than the Tumbador… put the Quinto between your legs and the tumbador to the side of your able hand and let go.... I will say of course start practicing just with the Quinto once you dominate and feel comfortable you can add the sound of the Tumbador. They are sold separate or in matching pairs. I will post a picture of me with a pair used as decoration in my kid sister home as decoration. in the Bongo larger one is called the hembra.... the smaller one is called macho. Martillo is called the way the bongo march and interact with the rhythm set by the conga. The bongo is like a free dancer going around and coloring the beat... and of course in salsa if you play bongos... you also play the cowbell... very important in salsa. Wishing you the best of luck... I will try to post more posts about those instruments. Glad to help out what I can. Best Wishes.
@GipsyOfNewSpain Thanks for the info and encouragement. I have been taught that the small drum in a bongo set is the macho, and the larger one is the hombre. No problem, it's the sound that counts. The arts organisation who are hosting this course owns at least one conga, at least one djembe, the smaller items, and a complete conventional kit (of unknown quality). I will be able to try out the conga before I think of making a purchase. There may be a problem with sound in the block of flats where I live...I sometimes forget myself and end up splitting a finger or two. Must become more proficient...
@Red_Cat Macho and Hombre are the same thing. I will post the video that explain about Macho and Hembra... Macho and Hombre is the same thing a male. Hembra is female. Small one is the Macho and the Larger one is the Hembra. This guy series is nice for you because is in english and pretty good.

@GipsyOfNewSpain I misspelled it, sorry. Come to think of it, it was the auto spellcheck that changed the spelling! Huh.
Really love this. drums are so primal. I feel the music vibrate.
@Red_Cat Not a problem... I am in constant struggle with "auto spellcheck" sometimes I do things on purpose like denying Capital letters to "trump", "russia", etc, etc, etc.
Bongo being around since the beginnings of Salsa but bongo is what I called an ancillary... there were salsa bands with only 2 percussionists.... Congas always Congas because they can carry a rhytmn... and bongo and timbal player besides those also played the cowbell.... a normal setup in salsa is timbal player, conga player and bongo player that also plays the cowbell. timbal player will also had smaller cowbel with the timbales and cimbal. In the post I posted about rumba with a few congueros like Papines or Rumba in.... bongoes will be useless because... congueros will play the part of the bongoes but at a louder and more beautiful, crisper sound. One conguero will be the tumbador... A louder Bass like of sound... el quinto is the star... a crispier sound constant in a solo thru the whole rumba. even timbales are not needed unless wanted to for the mambo parts... cowbells. there a lot of great bongo players... I met Roberto Rohena of Fania All Star Fame. I will try to find a song written by Puerto RIcan Rafael Hernandez (to most the greatest songwriter) in the island... and while living in Cuba wrote "El Bongocero". I will try to find a Roberto Rohena with a Custom Made Bongo. In a Salsa Band Bongo has a place and the player switch back and forth between bongo and cowbell. Bongo is like a tease, playing around the melody and the Conga Beat.
Many thanks for that detail. I am just off to a physiotherapy appointment, but will check out the videos later
Maybe @GipsyOfNewSpain will be able to tell you about the origin. This guy’s got great rhythm.
I will try... thank you for trusting me..
