We have red-rumped swallows nesting on our porch. They return every year. Sometimes the nest can be reused and sometimes it breaks and falls during the winter so they build a new one. This year they are rebuilding, but there seem to be three birds doing the building. (We have seen all three at once). Does anyone know if this is common? I have tried looking it up on line but can't find anything!
This cutie?
Looks like it.
@CeliaVL I understand that they're an important insectivore; often eating insect pests while "on the wing" (in flight). I also understand that many build (or buy) and mount nest boxes for them to encourage their return.
@Robecology They do very well here since we have lots of mosquitoes and other insects. Some years the produce three broods, one after the other.
Pictures, please!
