Riding around today, I saw a killdeer hunting insects in the local soccer field. I pulled in to photograph "him" and I discovered the mate. If "she" hadn't stood up I probably would have walked right by her and never noticed! She is incubating 4 eggs, so I backed off and got into my car and she settled right back down on them. I hope all goes well with her brood--she's nested in a high traffic parking lot. With any luck I'll be able to post baby plover pics someday soon.
oh, i love plovers! the ones here in oz look differently weird, like yellow-masked little secretaries. & they have a disturbing habit of trying to claim roads, including raising their young close to them.
the pic is just archive.
I happened upon a mated couple once. She was incubating her eggs. As I approached, she ran off doing the broken wing dance to distract me away from her nest. Such beautiful birds. If you're ever lucky enough to hold one in your hands ad look at the extraordinary fine detail of the colors on their plumage, well, it's enough to make one doubt that there is no God(s).
I heard several skylarks and saw my first swifts of the summer today - the skylarks were high up out of sight but singing at full volume, the swifts were making low-level passes down a leafy lane only a few feet off the ground while flying at their typical high speed and catching insects.
PS: @AKfishlady is right - those really are great shots!
