Hey folks!
In a few weeks I’ll be heading to Pennsylvania to backpack that section of the Appalachian trail. I’ve heard horror stories about the rocks so anyone have firsthand experience with that section? How bad are they?
I know a few sections in Virginia very well and nothing about the rest of the AT, so it's good to hear from folks who do.
I hope you'll report back afterwards.
Yes I’ll report back and probably upload a vlog to YouTube if anyone wants to see how bad the rocksilvania section of the AT is. I started making videos of my section hikes last year. I highly recommend doing this so you can go back and relive them in the future. It’s well worth the time.
They're dreadful! And they last forever!
Use walking sticks. But they too can be dangerous for getting stuck between rocks. It's a long part of the trail.
Just what I wanted to hear!?
@Charl5 Are you doing the whole state?
@AstralSmoke yes that’s the plan. Starting just north of pen-mar park. I have 2 weeks but it sounds like the rocks will slow me down a bit.
@Charl5 I averaged about 15 miles/day if I remember correctly. I'd hiked from GA, so was pretty fit. I'm sure people have done it faster. You only need to average 16.5 mi/day with no days off for two weeks. I was very happy to leave PA!
Oh, I used light boots, which I highly recommend.
The northern 2/3 of the state is the worst. Maybe you can make some really good time in the first 75 miles.
Best of luck!
@AstralSmoke thanks for the info? I usually hike in trail runners so I’ll think I’ll wear a pair with a more sturdy sole on this section. It sounds like I’ll have enough time to finish the state but I’m out to enjoy not crush the miles. So if I don’t make it I’ll pick up where I left off next time. The best part of section hiking ?

Posted by CallMeDaveI've never been a big wildflower person, but this is the season for it here in Appalachia. Other people can identify every variety. I'm not there yet.
