We recently laid off a Nurse Practitioner at our small clinic. It was said she spent too much time with patients! There was just an article about a large hospital, Swedish, that was accused last year of being a business (a famous neurosurgeon was concurrently running multiple surgeries). To me the finger points directly at overpopulation. There are too many of us needing services and doctor shortages are becoming endemic. Poor national healthcare means people go to what is known as Emergency room health care which is the leading cause of bankruptcies in the country. The patient suffers and so do the hospitals. Medical care is a resource and we are straining it with our numbers and lack of proper financial management. Insurance companies need to make money to remain viable and they look where ever they can.

@Akfishlady Anything to make money. While in Europe dependents could go to the hospital for free. After a while it was found that lots of women were going simply to talk to the staff. They felt their life was boring since the husbands were always out. A charge was levied to reduce the flow. In Seattle I and my partner had excellent insurance and the hospital was always pushing tests to get the insurance payments. A recent article in the Atlantic showed how many doctors are told to push medication to get income for the hospitals. I don't think many of us understand how expensive it is to run a medical facility.

Posted by TO_BYI'm remembering Sam for Memorial Day. He died over this last year. A memorable street-performance artist up here. He originally hailed from Tonga. Big spirited. Loved America.
