I’m thinking about trying get sober. I tried 2 years ago and lasted about 4 months. I was at the end of a loveless and sexless marriage and just felt like my whole life was a mess. I’m d now and feel pretty stable other than my drinking.

Just wanted tell someone and thought this might be a good place.

I've done AA for quite a few years and became quite unhappy with rigidity and tough love attitude. So i searched for another way for a long time found myself happy with Refuge Recovery a Buddist path and Lifering a secular path.

Yeah I’m not sure I’m going to be able to keep up with AA. I could handle individual people talking about god because let’s face it, we hear it all the time.

What pisses me off is that the book and stupid thing they recite at the beginning of a meeting says we’re powerless over alcohol. Fuck that! I own my recovery! If I stay sober it’s because of my own damn hard work. Not because I opened my heart to a magic sky daddy.

Sorry for the swears but it gets me worked up

Congratulations! I’ve got 29 days sober. Do it for yourself. Treat yourself kindly, and make sure you have plenty of chocolate. I can’t believe the cravings!

Well you found some great people here. Always good advice floating around.
When you tried 2 years ago, how'd you go about it? I'm just curious. Maybe we can steer you in a good direction.
I'm not a fan of AA. Although, I admit it was a bit of a crutch in the earlier days, but I'm not a believer in the 12 step programs. I prefer SMART myself, and like to use a lot of these message boards to interact with folks.

I went to AA meetings but just kind of floundered. My personal life was a mess. I felt like I should get sober but didn’t necessarily want to. Now my personal and work life are in order and I feel like I am really ready for sobriety

@Marcie1974 Good to hear. Yea AA helped me a bit in early sobriety, but now not so much. I've been looking into SMART recovery. Seems to be a pretty feasible alternative to the 12 step, faith healing non-sense. Hopefully you'll find something you're comfortable with.

Hope you put yourself on a good path. Please ask any of us you feel comfortable with for support or a little info. Most have already mentioned 12-step and SMART recovery. If you are concerned about all the 'god' stuff in meetings we had a decent discussion about that in one of @mertheist 's posts. We've also posted some non-believer alternatives to regular 12-step programs: including literature. With you in the struggle. Peace.

Well drinking could be a symptom, have you done any thinking or therapy to find out why u drink?

I know how it all started and I do have clinical depression. I’ve been stable with my depression for almost 10 years but know I would definitely benefit from therapy. My insurance is crap right now though and I really can’t afford it. Hoping to find a better job in the coming months

@Marcie1974 u can message me if u want. I have not been diagnosed with depression, but I know I have something 🙂. Alcohol is a depressant, I used to drink alone until I passed out almost every night for about 10 years. I brushed with pancreatitis twice and decided I want to live pain free. On top of all other problems drinking gave me diabetes, and I am on max size of Metformin. Amazingly I finally listened to my doctor, last 8 weeks or so I simply walk around the block for 45 minutes, and that brings my glucose levels down to almost normal. It is a small victory, but that is how everything works. Baby steps!

@agnosticbuddhist it’s weird but I just really feel at peace about it. Granted it’s only day 1. Last time I just felt like my social life was over without booze. Now I almost feel like there’s MORE I can do since I don’t have to worry about whether I’ll be able to buy booze

Good to hear. Most of us need help with this to stay sober. At least during the first year. I tried countless times on my own and it wasn't until I poisoned myself with alcohol and stopped breathing that I was able to ask for help. I don't recommend this! I almost did not make it back , and I would not have had the last 19 years of life that I have been given. I went to outpatient treatment, it was covered by insurance. I attended AA for the first year only, I do not like AA, but they do help people get and stay sober. There are other sober groups out there too. Whatever you do, please get some kind of help. And tell everyone you know that you no longer drink. This makes it a solid commitment and prevents the occasion of someone giving you alcohol, assuming you still drink. This has happened and leads to instant relapse. No need to say why, you can make a joke about it. I sometimes use Robert Downey's joke, "I'm allergic to alcohol, every time I drink I break out in handcuffs". 🙂 Sobriety is the greatest gift I have given myself. I wish you well.

I did do some looking into secular programs but the closest one that has evening meetings is almost 2 hours away. When I tried to stop 2 years ago all I could think of was the fun I was missing out on. I have a completely different outlook now and really don’t feel like I’ll be missing out on anything. I know it will still be difficult but I don’t have this feeling like I can’t have a social life anymore

@Marcie1974 that's great. when you realize that it is just an illusion that drinking is necessary to have fun , you will also notice that fun is more fun when you are sober . For real!

it is a good place. I have given up drinking for about 10 years now and smoking and drugs but it isn't easy. falling off the wagon is better than stressing as that is the biggest killer. I damaged my liver drinking and still have the DT`s from drinking as it must damage nerves but I'm good with it. I found I had to change my whole lifestyle. drink should have a health warning on it for sure. it's definitely a gateway drug and not weed. weeds better and I wish I could smoke it but im one of the unlucky ones. I don't miss hangovers or waking up having wet myself or worse. you weren't born to drink and you have done it before so you can do it again. I found tobacco by far the hardest thing to give up.

This is the perfect place and telling someone 'outloud' is a great way to start.

You can do this and we'll be right here through it all so much asl you'll allow us.

Thank you. As much as I hated AA for the "higher spirit" shit, I did like going to meetings and hearing stories. A friend is going to go with me tonight. I actually feel at peace with going.

@Marcie1974 good! I had an epiphany once at a meeting. I realized as I was listening to a profoundly moving story, that it was possible that something I would say could maybe touch someone, help someone, the way that I was being helped by their stories. Sounds silly maybe, but it just hadn't occurred to me!

@DeeWoman Well said.
