What not to say to a friend experiencing a mental health problem.

Seriously.
Mini-rant: I do have depression, have had most of my life. This year I was diagnosed with a medical condition where eating ANYTHING is difficult to impossible, so naturally I’m weak, and must rest. My son just told me this weekend that he thought I was not active because I was depressed.
No dude. It’s malnutrition. I deal better with depression than only being able to sip Sprite for a month...but thanks. Argh.
Dismissiveness and discounting from folks who tell me how I feel instead of ASKING drive me a little nuts.
I get it fully. At 72 I'm starting to get extreme anxiety but I think the American political scene has something to do with this. As a result I find more and more than I cannot sleep or do not sleep for very long. I wake up constantly. A friend of mine has this and his doctor gives him meds that knock him out at night. Sorry. I don't want to be knocked out because I will not be in control. Perhaps my anxiety is a result of feeling I am no longer in control.
Do you have the health insurance for some kind of talk therapy? A 12-step group? SMART recovery? There are different kinds of meditation to try. Please do what you need to take care of yourself.
@kmdskit3 Meditation? SMART recovery? I wouldn't take this crap if I had it. A 12 step group? What, like AA? Please! Been there, done that, and not going back. What I have with Aetna/Coventry is people who ask you from time to time if you feel like hurting yourself. WTF?
I think I explained in my post that my anxiety comes from a feeling that I can no longer be in control and I am a person that does like to be in control. This should be plain enough. Obviously if you are knocked out in order to sleep you are not in control. As an alcoholic I had zero drinks yesterday. I had 2 drinks the day before that. If I have a lot of drinks I am again no longer in control. A person has to be in control of themselves. They have to understand what is going on and why. At least, I do.
Posted by Fibonacci1618This is an article discussing the differences and similarities between a 12 Step Program and SMART Recovery. I'm curious about your thoughts or experiences between the two..... [thefix.com]
