Self-advertising?
Hey guys, I write a weekly column in a couple regional newspapers that gets plenty of clicks and views (at least by metrics I can track, whenever those in charge of the website actually update it).
I own the rights to the column due to an agreement with a previous publisher (everything else I write as part of my job belongs to the company). I love the column. I also writing editorials and things like that.
Lately, as my company has been doing a poor job of customer support and keeping up its end of the bargain as far as getting word out, I've been thinking about branching out. Do you guys have any advice for a simple, super shameless Facebook page, or something like it?
@Xuande -- Not with grammar like that. In your bio you say that you are a professional writer, but judging by this post I would question that.
You are a member of this group, so you know that anything you write may be posted here, but don't expect to commercialize anything. If you don't mind writing for grins and giggles, have at it. The occasional shameless self-promotional post, something like this post, is also acceptable, but the keyword is 'occasional'. If the frequency is too great, Admin is likely to toss you, and if Admin doesn't, I might.
That being said, give us your best shot
This post is both incredibly rude and entirely wrong. I'm not sure how you managed to do both, but allow me to address the issues.
First, I wrote the post at 2 or 3 a.m. during a break in a long shift. I acknowledge there are errors, but this does not excuse your rather rude reaction to them. This is not my job, I did not go behind my initial post and edit it. I did not expect to have my credentials questioned or my skill insulted.
Imagine that.
Second, my post was not ever about promoting myself here. I will not insult you. However, I would imagine that someone who is such a stickler for grammar would also be a big believer in basic reading comprehension. In your bio it says you have worked as a freelance editor. Judging by this post, I would question that.
Third, since I do make a living as an editor, allow me to help you. Professional writers do not capitalize generic titles like "admin" unless they are followed by a name and it is an official title. Administrator Whoever still wouldn't be correct, but would be much closer than capitalizing Admin for no reason.
Professional writers also end every sentence with some form of punctuation. Your last sentence, for instance, does not end with any. I assume you meant to put a period, being a real professional writer and editor, but since we're being condescending, I can only assume you lied about everything in your bio.
It's " and not ' except in headlines.
Finally, punctuation goes inside. There are exceptions to this, your usage is not one of them. I'll give you an example. Evidentialist is a real professional "writer."
Thanks for your understanding. If you are an example of what I can expect from asking questions in this group, feel free to delete me. If not, perhaps from now on we can at least be civil toward each other.
@Xuande -- Incredible. Okay, you admit that the post is a bit crude, which is what I said. I also said that considering the post, I would tend to question your claims. A reasonable statement that seems to have gouged you deeply. Everything beyond that was regarding your freedom to post whatever you write as long as there was no effort to commercialize it. I told you that the occasional shameless promotional post, like this one, is acceptable here as long as promotional material was occasional only. You are, for example, free to post any commercial URL that you own, maintain, or recommend. I then went on to say that if it became too frequent either Admin or myself would toss you.
Regarding your remark about the use of Admin, here it is considered a name, not a department. To address the person in charge it is @Admin. If I were intending to say 'administration' in the generic sense, I would have done so. As for the period to end my final sentence, I have no excuse for that. I missed it. Now, where do we go from here?
