That's exactly it. Big Aggie is now producing "Vegan Food", 90% of it is junk food.
Nestles owns Simply Naked, Pure. Kelloggs owns Kashi. These products are highly processed,
contain no phytonutrients, and often are designed to reach what food scientists call the
bliss point, where mindless eating takes over.
The perfect example is Amy's Pad Thai. It has 28 grams of sugar. That's like eating candy.
Just because it's Vegan does not mean someone should eat that crap. And, eating processed Vegan foods will not keep you healthy, and us being healthy is the best way to promote Veganism. Once people become what they eat, they tend to become more ethical as well.
I have a 3,000 sq ft. garden. It has become both a joy and a bane. This morning I spent a couple of hours adding another layer of mulch. I also had some kale and potatoes from that garden. Unfortunately, growing, maintaining, harvesting, storing (half of my 60+ garlic bulbs are now dried out) and cooking are too much for one person to bear. I have a 2 vine, green table grape arbor and when I look at it I cringe. But, yes, processed food should be avoided and luckily we have a great co-op, market (commercial and farmers) and lots of farms in the area.
@Sheannutt Garlic is normally a winter plant. Plant the cloves in the Fall and harvest them in early summer. When I noticed the bulbs were drying out and starting to send shoots I planted about a dozen and they are about a foot high. Maybe by the Fall they will be ready but I need to learn how to better store them. Before, we would have 100 bulbs (25 were set aside for next years crop) and we would use them all. Now I can't use even a quarter of that number.
I know about the Willamette Valley area. Did you know one reason it is so fertile is that the soil was washed down from Washington during the Missoula floods. Look up Nick on the Rocks (from PBS) and the episode on Dry Falls. It is amazing.
The island has lots of farms as, before the Grand Coulee Dam was built, we were one of the breadbaskets to W. Wash. The area, Skagit (the river is the 3rd largest in the state) is the most naturally fertile place in the state and it is a major agricultural area. [extension.wsu.edu] BTW, the Main city, Mt. Vernon is the Tulip capital of the country and bulbs are even sent to Holland. [ecosia.org]
@Sheannutt Sheila, Here you go. [kcts9.org] I love this series and this gave me a chance to see this episode again. I have been in the area many times. I have also been to Crater Lake in central Oregon.
@Sheannutt Have you tried Roku? There is a purchase price but many stations are free and there are a lot. PBS may have some free shows but they ask for a donation to get access for some programming.
@Sheannutt So do I. What are some you like?
@Sheannutt Variety is good. I have documentaries, historical (I loved "the Crown" ) and many more in my 'que'. I understand the picky part. I think most of us do that.
@Sheannutt A good friend is British. For the second season we had dinner at their house and watched 2 episodes. She stopped and commented. She also had a book showing the crown jewels. She was really surprised at how accurate they were. I really believe knowledge can help one appreciate art even more and this was a case in point.
