SkotlandSkye: I almost wonder whether this could be posted where it will be more generally viewed? Is there some way to make this a recurring topic for discussion...with different memes...maybe every month? A way of making it uppermost in peoples' thoughts, a way to influence discussion?
I feel like it's not getting enough traction here.
my goal in posting these is that you -- and others -- will take them and post them on your own social media -- Facebook, Twitter, Insta, etc. Spread them however you can and as much as you can!
@SkotlandSkye so here's the thing. This is potent. I look for opportunity to discuss people on people horrors. When I have opportunity to open the discussion to include animals, I will do this. But, just so you're aware: I don't do Social Media. And I don't because I had a hunch that at some time things were going to blow wide open like what's happened with Facebook.
I often think this. The cute little lambs we see frisking in the fields are destined to be fattened and killed almost before their lives have begun. The gas chamber, the industrialisation of death, does not seem so far removed from the conveyor belt killing of the abattoir, and I wonder how future generations will judge us.
Doesn't it seem as if there's an awakening happening? Or is this my imagination? I mean a mainstream awakening...people in the mainstream realizing that animals are us/we are them?
@crazycurlz Not to me. I look at young people today and they mostly seem oblivious. I think inter-species compassion will be a minority thing for a long time to come.
Edit- To clarify, they love their dog but will feed it horsemeat.
@Gareth I live with two really wonderful, thoughtful 20 somethings, my son and his fiance. Fan out and the people they connect with seem to be aware of politics. Even at work, the young people are aware, but then, I work with young professionals.
You are in the UK? I wonder if putting Trump in office has lit a fire under the butts of the young people in the US. Millenials here are speaking up and have been getting engaged since Obama and even more so since Bernie. But there's nothing like Trump to put the reactionary fear in all of us.
Personal question because I can't tell: would you consider yourself a pessimist by nature?
@crazycurlz Ahaha! You've hit on something there; I've often been accused of cynicism (unfairly imho, but where's there's smoke....) and no intelligent being can look at our society without a certain amount of despair. But, pessimist? I don't honestly think so - in my day-to-day dealings I'm generally upbeat and playful.
I think you're right in that it's impossible to sit on the fence regarding the current White House and the emergence of the JD's is evidence of that.
My experience of young people of my class is that their hearts may be in the right place, but they are debile. It's kind of complex.
@Gareth new word to me debile and I like it. But, I don't know if it's fair to put the weight of this on the young people. WWII men were men. Well defined. Since that time, we've made our children, both men and women reconsider their roles. I don't think it's appropriate to hang them out to dry while they have so much to sift through.
One more thought about cynicism...it's probably healthy to some degree. Optimism brings hope and cynicism tempers that/balances it out. You're distinguishing between cynicism and pessimism and I was not. But, it's too late...or EARLY(???) now for me to sort this out. LOL another time...
JD???
@crazycurlz Sorry, Justice Democrats; lazy typing. Go to bed, Sweet dreams.
SkotlandSkye, my Jewish great grandparents were killed in the shoah/holocaust. I am/try to be an advocate for genocide victims. Have been this for years for humans. Have seen/felt the connection with animals for years and haven't been ignorant to the animal rights issues. But, to couple them is surprisingly, sadly appropriate. What a shocking meme, heartbreaking and disappointingly powerful.
I also can't hit 'like' because what I feel is something other.
We are all Earthlings....and we all have equal right to live here free from the imprisonment, enslavement, exploitation, and death at the hands of humans. I'm glad you see the connection. Are you familiar with Gary Yourofsky and his speeches?
@SkotlandSkye Sounds as if Yourofsky is his own brand: stepping away from PETA, calling out the Humane Society. Thanks for putting him on my radar. When I have time, I will listen to his speeches.
It will be interesting to see what kind of comments the non-vegetarians/vegans will make.
Years ago my late partner and her brother and his family were making a road trip to S. LA. On the way back we were just outside of Sacramento when this smell hit us. Everyone looked at each other and everyone said we didn't do it. We then rolled down the windows and discovered the smell was coming from the outside. Windows up didn't help and the smell went on for miles. It turned out we were downwind from a feed lot.
