I worked as a train conductor. Once I was working a train up from Horsham (Sussex) to London Victoria. We stopped at Redhill, and two nuns got on. We arrived at East Croydon and there, on the platform, were two MORE nuns - except that these 'holy sisters' were in stiletto heals, fishnets, absolutely TINY habits that fitted like a second skin, and a fair amount of make-up - they were two young girls on their way to a fancy dress party! The two (real) nuns on the train were getting off at East Croydon - and as the doors opened the two pairs of holy sisters found themselves facing each other. I know words were exchanged between them, but unfortunately I was not close enough to overhear what was said. However the two real nuns walked past me along the platform on their way out of the station - one looked SERIOUSLY annoyed, the other actually appeared mildly amused.

The problem is that it looks like a 'practical item' with the bowl/recess in the middle. It looks like something someone would have specifically for the purpose of having somewhere to keep their keys - in short it doesn't 'look like art', it looks like a practical key-bowl, and a fascinating one that people will want to look closely at. It's not about shame, it's about self preservation. I consider myself lucky to live in Britain, where being an atheist does not place you at risk of harm or misfortune. There are other nations and places, however, where that is just not the case. In bible-belt US, declaring yourself an atheist can certainly do harm to your career prospects - and potentially could result in actual, physical or psychological harm. In some of the muslim nations of the middle east it can actually result in your death. In Britain, and I believe in Canada and many other 'sensibly secular' nations, there is no reason NOT to be open - but sure as hell, in other places, there really are reasons to keep quiet.

For myself, I define 'atheist' as someone who is not a theist - so if you don't meet the requirement to be a theist (ie believe in the existance of at least one divine, supernatural entity) then you are an atheist... simple as that. The bottom line, however, is that 'atheist' is just a lable - and one without a generally accepted definition - so if you talk to people, just define YOU.
