They brutally scraped away the images, thinking it would ''kill'' that religion, (even though it was already dead) and now, the art's gone, too. Should we destroy the images in the caves of Lescaux, the aboriginal ''dream time'' cave art in Australia, the Maya images, etc? It's a challenging question. Buddhists in Nepal (as well as aboriginals in Australia and indigenous people in the US southwest) (that's interesting) make incredibly detailed sand paintings as a form of meditation. They don't have churches/temples but their thinking is expressed internally via a work of art which takes days or hours to create. Would you want to erase those, too?
