My cats never go on the counter where food is prepared. They have their own table with their own food bowls on it. Cats like height so compromise, but not with food prep areas.

Mine aren't either. And they adhere to the rule anytime I'm within eyesight or earshot. I also don't keep anything intriguing to them on the counters.
