True Confession. I am not real fond of July 4th. I don't like fireworks going off all freaking night. Where do people get the money to burn that stuff up? I used to have a dog we had to sedate from mid June to mid July. If it wasn't fireworks it was thunderstorms. Around here the fireworks have been going off for several nights, and with the 4th on Wednesday, I still have to work on Thursday. Yeah, I know, I'm a crab.
Got into a discussion on Facebook about people firing fireworks where they aren't supposed to. Which goes on around here on the 4th. Not supposed to fire them off in the city limits. Stops no one. These two yahoos were complaining about the woman who complained to the police because fireworks were being sold in an area they aren't supposed to be sold. I defended her because of the law. Also because my dogs cannot be consoled when the fireworks go off. These guys thought it was cool to call the woman the "c" word because she wanted the law followed. Ended up blocking both because of their implied threats because I disagreed. So, I don't care too much for fireworks because my dogs don't care too much for fireworks. People close by firing off fireworks where they're not supposed to, piss me off. Bah! Humbug!
I enjoy the paid day off work. But fireworks don't really do it for me. Especially when I'm single.
@ShuMei2018
Well, color me intrigued! "If only" what?
Oh, I am the same way! The other night some asshole set off a M80! Scared the shit out of me, I called the cops cuz its illegal to do that in tge city limits. I wish selling them were illegal, they are too dangerous. And what about people with PTSD? Plus the animals that freak out? I too had to put a dog down cuz she was so scared and knocked off brake fluid in the garage which got in her eyes, then in her bloodstream. It was so sad. Hate fireworks unless they are done by professionals!
I enjoy fireworks that are for display. Catherine wheels, Roman candles, Rockets with star-bursts. But I can find no merit in fireworks where the main purpose it to make a loud explosion - unless they are being used to attract attention in a case of emergency.
No, you're right. It pollutes the air, terrifies pets, disturbs wildlife, etc. And of course people are hurt each year messing with them.
I'm a weirdo, I like fireworks. I think they just don't bother me because a, I'm hard of hearing, and b, I grew up sort of near a firing range, so I'm used to the sound. Plus, I kinda like the smell of cordite.
I'm not a fan of fireworks either. It's the only time I can't calm the dogs. They are terrified of them. I turn the tv on some nature program, antiques roadshow or cspan. Anything that's low key and monotone. It soothes them. I also turn on the white noise machine and a fan in my bedroom and if it gets to bad that's where they usually hide out.
As a combat vet, with three nervous pets in the house, and a very understanding and supportive wife, we tend to camp out in our home theater room which is pretty soundproof. The dvd selections are calming stuff like "our blue planet".
The four "nervous nellies" chill out, have snacks.. nap. And try to avoid the entire celebration.
I can only tell you about my experience. My family owns a campground (Dietz Recreation Park) in Centerpoint Indiana. We have 1000 plus people show up for our fireworks display. We spend a few thousand on a professional fireworks crew to set it up. It is actually coming up July 14th if anyone is interested. I personally have seen fireworks every year and been apart of the set up and clean up for the display. Tbh its not very exciting to me but when I was younger maybe 6 to 13 years old I loved it. We have a dance out on the beach and a bunch of light bracelets and other forth of July junk, really lol. But everyone keeps coming back and seems to enjoy it. The place is packed for the celebration. I think people comeback because its a tradition and they get to see the joy in their young kids faces. My parents also live out in the sticks and a professional fireworks salesmen lives nearby. He shows off his display about every weekend to potential buyers. It geta kind of annoying but its also kind of neat to see the color in the sky. I'm not sure if you don't like the small time fireworks that the general public puts on or if your like me and have just seen so many that they get repetitive. All I can say is I would rather have a nice fireworks display then not have them and a bunch of people just shooting there guns off to celebrate.
They make a wrap for dogs with anxiety called a thunder shirt. It works really well on my pomeranian. I love lighting off fireworks, big ones, but I don't have the money to spare this year so I volunteered to work.
Plus lately I don't feel like being very patriotic
The fireworks have already started where I'm at and will go through the end on July at least
Same here. The dopers and the unemployed seem to be the biggest poppers in my area.
@GwenC I agree with you but I have a metal roof like those on metal shop buildings. Also, I am not speculating about firework shooters. Some of those I describe live next door to me in a small apartment complex. Cops are out here hauling them away all the time, often putting items in bags as they go and the cops are wearing gloves.
My last dog would bark back at both thunder and fireworks. The appeal of fireworks for me has declined over the years. I like professional pyrotechnics every so often, but I don't like fighting crowds just for that anymore, and hearing the locals shoot bottle rockets does get irritating.
I love thunder and fireworks.
Especially the ones that thump the chest.
Since it is a middle of the week holiday the fireworks will probably only go on for 1/2 hour or so in this area.
