It’s really difficult to lend and get your money back when dealing with friends or relatives. If someone else asks me to borrow money, I will always make them write a receipt mentioning the date when they have to return the money. I do have trust issues, especially when talking about money . I remember reading about it on Wealth Pursuits for the first time and thought it would be disrespectful to ask them to sign a receipt. It didn’t take me long to change my mind and choose to respect myself over them.
Don't lend anybody money and don't let anybody borrow you car. You will regret it if you do.
I loan people money and if they don't pay it back then I know not to loan them anymore money, same thing with tools, don't bring it back or bring it back dirty or damaged and I don't loan you anymore tools.
Shakespeare in Hamlet has Polonius giving this advice to his son Laertes:—.” Neither a borrower nor a lender be”.
So I suppose there is wisdom in what you say, but most people if asked for by a friend would probably do so if it was within reason. You do have a dilemma if they don’t pay back the money and ultimately this could lead to a falling out, so perhaps saying no is best.
My roommate who pays me rent needed to borrow money for his meds - he paid me back. Trust.
I needed to borrow from my gf for an airline ticket and paid her back. Trust.
