I have a second home on my farm and I am thinking of making much needed repairs and then putting it up on Air B&B to welcome folks looking for a rural get-a-way. This farm has horses, goats and iris, a nice fire ring and a fishing pond in need of some work on it but has superb fishing. The house is actually a 3 bedroom doublewide my dad put here when he and his GF wanted to get out of their neighborhood in Des Moines. That neighborhood is seeing a lot of drive by shootings and crime these days. Anyway, I thought it would be a great way to meet new folks and create some much needed income here. Anyone with experience doing something similar? thoughts on my plan and what you think is a reasonable rate to charge. I can not allow dogs loose on the property because I do have livestock here. Smoking would have to be taken outside on the deck.
It sounds like a good idea. Get a few people in and get an idea of what people would like and you can always offer a bit more variety as time goes on to maintain interest
Yes plus many things are seasonal too.
@HeraTera I have iris on a farm north of me quite some distance and I just now trying to recover my beds here. I need to fence off my back yard as the girls seem to think the rhizomes are a gourmet delight! If you have a large yard where you could raise a few dozen varieties I would recommend it as extra income.
Go for it. Sounds like you might have to put quite a bit into the repairs but it’s a good investment in the long run. People do seek out rustic country getaways. Although not me because I live on farmland in the country with my horses LOL. I seek out big cities for my vacation. But there is a lot of general appeal in country/farm getaways. I do have a business on my property but I “rent out” to dogs for their country getaways. LOL.
I too have horses, I spent a few decades riding for a living and the racetrack life got to me finally and I said goodbye for the last time.
There are always risks for something like this, or for any business. Into me it depends on the amount of time and energy you are willing to put into it.
I can no longer build carbon fiber airplane parts and the $128 a week I make in town just doesnt cut it. this will allow me to be home most of the time to take care of things I can't now due to being away to work or finances. I came off working the racetrack as a ponyrider working seven days a week so I know the amount of time I have to devote to it
I hope it goes great! You have obviously thought it out well.
@BudFrank I still have a lot of planning to do, check with the county to see what if any permits are required. Figure out rates as I have no clue and I do have a PayPal account set up. I can take some of my furniture over there but will need more beds. So I have a lot more figuring things out yet to do!
