Why do I let people who don't really know me or matter to me at all hurt my feelings? Conversely, why are some people rude hateful assholes to people they don't even know? Is it so hard to be nice? If you don't like me that's just fine but being a dick is totally unnecessary.
A counselor once told my wife and i that "what someone else thinks of you is none of your business" I know sometimes it's hard to take this approach but in the long run you did not need them in your life anyway.
It sounds like you and I are very similar. In my opinion, it doesn't cost me anything to be nice to people. Whether it's asking the person ringing up my groceries how they are doing, just smiling at someone I happened to make eye contact with, or complimenting someone on their outfit/hair/etc. Maybe I can make someone smile who is having a bad day....that's awesome!
I don't understand people who go out of their way to be a dick. My mom is a very negative person and will fly off the handle at the poor worker behind the counter. It's selfish and rude. I'm grateful I take after my dad in that respect.
Here's a good example, my mom and I were in Target one day getting something to drink at the little food court area. An older woman was ahead of us and had hooked her cane on the counter. After she ordered her hands were full and she forgot her cane. I brought it over to her....didn't think anything of it.....that's what any normal and decent human would do. Took maybe 15 seconds out of my day. My mom looked at me with astonishment and said it was so nice of me to do. That's when I really realized what a selfish person she is. Even having seen this older lady had forgotten her cane, mom would have just ignored it and been on her way....
Wish for "niceness" in one hand, spit in the other...which hand fills up?
In short, act the way you want to be treated and waste NO time worrying about how others "should" act...you Only control yourself.
People are dicks because of the anonimity of the internet. Everybody wants to be a comedienne, and people say shit they would never say in real life.
99% of what you hear on the internet can be disregarded.
I soooooo agree with you. I cannot tell you how many times I say to myself "Everybody's a fucking comedian." Now, some people ARE funny and witty. And a lot of times I truly crack up.
Other people think their constant snark and being sarcastic or dismissive is amusing--it's not to me.
Or incessant sexualization in non-sexual discussions. Really? That's all you've got?
And, yes, I wonder -- "If we were in somebody's back yard sitting around at a barbecue, would they have said that?" Probably not. And, if so.....yeah, I wouldn't be in the audience very long.
But, here with 40k members, there is bound to be one person who thinks the wannabe comedians are amusing, so they continue.
And before anyone starts with that I just don't have a sense of humor, blah, blah, blah....I laugh more easily and wholeheartedly than anybody I know.
