But it's very hard when they defend all kinds of nastiness, such as separating children from their families and awarding the rich tax breaks whilst screwing the poor. They don't deserve it when the policies they endorse are less than civil. But lead by example.

Civility, yes. Pretended tacit agreement, absolutely not. Honest reaction to statements and actions of Trump supporters. Civil does not automatically mean you must act like their opposing stated positions are reasonable when you actually see them as horrendous and abusive and dishonest. If civil means not calling out lies and distortions, then no. I have been verbally intentionally insulted by some Trump supporters for honestly and sometimes bluntly criticizing Trump's political and policy actions. If someone's reaction to me honestly criticizing their chosen powerful politician is to call me names for exercising my Constitutional free speech, then I will respond more forcefully. That does not mean name-calling of people. It does mean calling bullshit as I see it. I expect them to do the same with me if they believe I have stepped over a line.
