So, I got an email threatening blackmail. An old email address had been hacked about 10 years ago, and hey claimed to have my password, and they did have one that was valid over 10 years ago.

The fist of the email was they claimed they captured all this while i was on a porn site and they wanted me to pay $2000 via Bitcoin if I didn't want anyone to know.

I was amused, but a little pissed that I had to take some time to report it.

I reported it to a government website, giving them the entire email including the header, because I now there are some people who are stupid enough to believe the claims, and I dont' want others to be victimized... and attempted blackmail is still a crime.

I am wondering is the person was dumb enough to use their real email and name.

Scam emails have been going around alot lately. One email service that has not been hit with many scam attempts would be ProtonMail, most likely because their servers are located only in Switzerland and thus any email addresses linked to them are a bit more private than say Yahoo or Gmail.

Firstly, the blackmail attempt regardless if the email address was yours was most likely a bluff. Secondly, it is very possible the scammer used a burner email address. The cryptocurrency craze has just begun, and Bitcoin is among one of the most desired coins to have an investment in. I know, as I'm a Bitcoin investor myself. It may have been somewhat annoying to receive such a threatening email, but I think you did the right thing by reporting it, and I also wouldn't take said threat too seriously.

I knew it was a blugg, just because the info they were usign was so outdated.

Just thought I'd strt teh discussion so that others would figure it out too.... probably most peopel here are smart enough to figure it out.

I'd suspect such an email was targeted towards "religious" persons who led a secret life.

Yeah. I dont' view porn often, but there is nothign in my history that I'd be ashamed of.

I think they were mos tlikley trying to put a scare into anyone whose life centered around religion or something.
