A few days ago I watched an old movie from(1941) staring Errol Flynn. It was a depiction of General Custer's life. The name of the movie was They died with their boots on. What struck me in the film was how they depicted Custer. He was shown as this kind to the Indians and as an American hero. My recollection of history was that he was a bigoted Indian hater with a huge ego. It was interesting how movies back then influenced public opinion intentionally. Not much different then today (sounded like Fox news)

The National monument site at the Custer battlefield years ago depicted Custer as a national hero. After “Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee” was published, the monument was completely changed to more accurately depict the facts of that engagement.

How you think wyatt earp became a legendary hero?

Agreed

I think if we look more closely at some of the so called heroes from history we will find a less than glorious reality. This applies to all countries, especially the European nations with their history of exploitation and plunder in their race against each other to colonise the planet. The slave trade and the almost extermination of native tribes were not just America’s shame. You are right about Custer as far as I have read, he was arrogant and egotistical and thought himself almost a demigod. Holywood as usual_had to make him look and act like a hero because they are in the business of fantasy not reality. And anyway the public need heroes, if they are spending at the box office they want to feel good afterwards not get a depressing doze of reality!

Hated history class in high school. Found it so much more meaningful after graduation, once I began to stumble across more authentic accounts.

The first cowboys were African Americans freed from bondage. Seeking employment they went west to the opening of Amer-indian lands to cattle barons. Narry a one on television. George Armstrong Custer had presidential ambitions. His ilk is running the country currently. And into the ground I might add. I hated all those cowboys vs indian shows as my mother taught me the real history of genocide.

Our ideas about a lot of those things have changed as people have learned more of the real facts. Unfortunately, there's now an industry promoting lies and stereo types.

Yup, we never get accurate history from any source. The victors write the history books. Ie - white America over the Indians for example.
