I may not go to what is currently recognized as a religious institution (Church, Mosque, Synagogue, Temple etc.) but I do wonder if other beliefs have come to replace the gods (believing in the State, for example) and if I go to other 'temples' instead. Both being equally as vague and as lacking in evidence for their existence as that of God(s) and Heaven(s). Is belief my enemy? Am I stuck with believing? When does my epistemological system cease to be based upon a belief?

I think to a large extent religion as a source of knowledge about the world has been replaced by science. As a source of morality it has been replaced by the golden rule. These things are necessary parts of living as a modern human, it’s not about having a belief.

The way I look at it, a belief in something is a belief, whether it's a religion or not. Anyone can be a fundamentalist anything -- it's when you attach yourself to something so much that it becomes the only "right" way to be in the world.

I think maybe that the epistemological system ceases to be based on a belief when one has quieted all of ones thoughts regarding any question except for this one " how does this thought make me feel physically , emotionally ? "
Now , you are not thinking or believing , you are sensing and perhaps this is as objective as we can possibly be .

God(s) is an invisible, imaginary human construct. No evidence, facts or data has ever been presented to support any existence. If what you believe, regardless of what that belief may be, can be supported by evidence, facts and data, then your beliefs are valid.

Ohferpetessake...replace a belief in a capricious Gawd with one in the state?.?.! I do not feel this is progress, buddy!

@Beach_slim what "marxism"? Been on here long enough to earn the t-shirt, seen very very little of that outmoded pathetic philosophy....have seen a bunch of righteous indignation about the OrangeTraitor, and rightly so.

@Beach_slim cut taxes for whom, exactly? And for how much? And i can tell you have never had a catastrophic illness, or child born with problems, thru no fault of your own. Which none of these things has Anything to do with "marxism" btw.......

Your question belittles people. I am not an unquestioning "true believer" in any ideology (religious, political, or economic) or institution. Humans do not have an innate need to be the captive of any irrational belief system.

@Beach_slim because left wing politics work you mental midget. Ensuring that everyone is healthy, well educated and free to pursue their interests and inclinations makes for a happier and more productive society. Its not our fault you're too dumb to see the facts in front of your face and call us "believers" because you understand fuck all.

@Beach_slim Why do you choose to mischaracterize, label, and insult people? You seem to be revealing something of your own character.

@Beach_slim You continue to prove my point. Keep on digging your own hole. And, by the way, I served my country in Berlin and personally stood up to the Russians. And, you dare question to question my patriotism and character?

Not sure how I belittle people with a question about my own thinking. Maybe you’re adding more to my words than there is? (Does that question also belittle you, I wonder?)

@Yanis I believe that your question suggests that people have an innate need to be or become captive "true believers" total system ideologies. That, I do believe, belittles the true nature of the human being.

@wordywalt What is the true nature of the human being?

@Yanis That we are multifaceted, contradictory biological creatures who have a great capacity for acquiring and integrating data or information if we do not ourselves become fixated on the need for certainty.

That appears to be the way things are going, is it one 'evil' replaced by a bigger one?

I believe in myself and my own judgement. The State is a reality so is fact and is therefore something you can't believe or disbelieve. I think you are tying yourself in knots with all this “believing” business. You have to separate belief from factual evidence. We are all entitled to believe anything we wish, but only hard evidence can make our beliefs real.

@Beach_slim Ice cream does exist, I just ate some. Fact ! The State I live in is real and they take my taxes to prove it is so. Fact ! I don’t need the history lesson or your reaction to my thoughts, they are just as valid as yours and I would never be rude enough to rubbish your views by calling them stupid.

@Beach_slim shut up and go away.
