I'm sure they are trying to impress the females, I wonder if howling louder improves their luck.

Years ago, my daughter and I bought a wall clock for our new apartment. It was lovely, with a picture of a wild animal on each hour. We didn't realize that it would also make the corresponding animal cries on the hours. Of course, the first one it reached was the howler monkey! That woke us up! LOL
