Is the Asteroid Belt the remains of a dead planet or the result of Jupiter's gravitational pull, or something else? I've pondered this for years and some of the erudite minds here may have the answer.

Here is another spin for you @Geoffrey51.... Why Jupiter has it but earth doesn't? (I am just spreading gas to the fire for no reason at all)

Gas planets form before rocky planets. So it’s probably the case that rocks too close never got an opportunity to form into planets.
