I just found out John McCain has died. While I didn't agree with him politically, I never forgot the time that he defended Obama during his running against him. I feel very sad as I watch the news about his life and I have a lump in my throat as I try to fight my tears. 😟

I held McCain in high regard and not because I agreed with his position on everything. He cared and made contemplated decisions...that is the best that anyone can do!

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

John McCain is among the last of a dying breed of patriot here in this nation, in my opinion. I didn't agree with his fundamental views on how best to govern, but he was a statesman -- antiquated term that young people in particular find sneer-worthy. He was a gentleman in spite of a great deal of violence and death in his life as a POW in the Vietnam conflict. Possibly elsewhere too for all I know. I'm sorry to see him go. He is one of the few conservative voices in Congress that has been raised against DT's worst deeds -- and I admire him for sticking to his principles instead of following party lines like a stupid damned sheep.

While i disliked his politics he had some integrity that is rare in politicians.

When he snatched the mic away from that racist old woman.

"No Ma'am. No Ma'am."

@BufftonBeotch and he showed no awkwardness about it, either!

@BufftonBeotch This occurred in my state just one county over. The area is heavily Eastern Euro/American & extremely narrow minded. The back of her head hadn't been combed & she was terrified that the Moslems were coming to rape her when it really was the Mexicans. ( =0} ) I cringed when I saw this in real time. McCain stood up to her with a backbone Mitch might consider employing.

I don’t know where I fall with him. On the one hand, he was a political maverick who was a relatively outspoken voice in a party that has lockstep values, and in the other, he was the man who brought the idiot that is Sarah Palin to the national stage, and arguably paved the way for 45. That and the fact that he sided with the Republicans on their destruction of what they termed Obamacare while enjoying free Cadillac health insurance for his cancer treatments at taxpayers expense. His heart always seemed in the right place, but his follow through was decidedly lacking. Nevertheless, I hold him in respect as he was really one of the better, independent voices in a party that has given over to naked greed, corruption, and especially complicity regarding this current administration. RIP, Senator.

I agree with you fully.

And utterly profoundly and bravely: after being captured, beaten, and tortured, he refused to leave his countrymen behind when his release had been negotiated. Who does that.

Didn't he vote "no" to repeal Obamacare though? I remember that being a big deal when it happened.

@joeymf86 yes he did. He was the determining vote. I remember seeing his thumbs down in the news. I think he was just out of the hospital and made it a point to cast his vote.

@joeymf86 Yes he did. I stand corrected on my claim, but I was essentially thinking of the points presented in this piece: [slate.com]

I remember him defending Obama too. I then look at how Trump acted during his presidential campaign against Hillary and how he's acted towards other people now. Such a huge difference in character. Remember, Trump was a "birther" when Obama was running and is the reason so many people thought Obama was Muslim. McCain's been trying to clean up Trump's messes since then. We lost a decent human being.

McCain told it like it is. So many still believe Trump on this because Trump is telling them what they want to hear.

I believe he was an honorable man and there are damned few of them in politics these days. I think Rump's behavior toward McCain was petty, childish, and totally classless

John McCain always had the people in mind.

I would note that Trump has been asked not to attend the funeral. That was probably McCain's last patriotic act. R.I.P., Senator.

That makes me smile. 🙂

If that's true, Trump will probably show up anyway... all the more reason to show up, in Trump's mind.
