"Capitalism was built on the exploitation and suffering of black slaves and continues to thrive on the exploitation of the poor, both black and white, both here and abroad. If Negroes and poor whites do not participate in the free flow of wealth within our economy, they will forever be poor, giving their energies, their talents and their limited funds to the consumer market, but reaping few benefits in return. The way to end poverty is to end the exploitation of the poor". MLK 1967
Those words are even truer today in America. Income disparity continues to increase, corporations and Wall Street are completely buying our politicians (thanks "Citizens United" ) , and the G.O.P. is trying harder than ever to displace the blame onto immigrants and minority groups. This will not end well for anyone.
Ever since our species figured out transportation and commerce, colonialism has always had it's victims and rulers. Past empires rose and fell riding on the backs of indigenous slaves. It's far more complex now, this global community. Corporations (read: untethered capitalism) and top tier banks are the new empires. I'm not holding out for economic fairness...
yep, covered it all, I have nothing to add.
To be more specific American slavery started when the puritans came over and enslaved the local Indians all the while trying to convert them to Christianity. but in Human terms... every race has been a slave at one time or another... We are slaves of a living wage right now. If our masters let us make one.
we are all slaves
Actually, no we aren't; we still have autonomy as to who mate with, have children with, believe in. We don't spend our days in forced labor under threat of violence or death, We do not see our children sold to others.
This we are all slaves stuff minimizes the horrors of actual slavery and gets under my skin.
Perhaps it is confusion on my grandchildren's faces when they found out that they can only trace ancestry back less than 150 years because their ancestors actually were slaves.
