In the movie called 'Equilibrium" -
In a futuristic world, a regime has eliminated war
by suppressing emotions: books, art and music
are strictly forbidden and feeling is a crime
punishable by death. Clerick John Preston
(Christian Bale) is a top-ranking government agent
responsible for destroying those who resist these
rules. When he misses a dose of Prozium, a mind-
altering drug that hinders emotion, Preston, who
has been trained to enforce strict laws of the
new regime, suddenly becomes the one capable
of overthrowing it.
-Question> in your own view do you agree that we
should do this to change the direction of our lives
by hindering our emotions? and why?
I liked Equilibrium. Sean Bean was good in it, even if his role was relatively small.
To answer the question:
“I need my pain!”
If you like the idea of dystopia, have at it. I'll opt out of that one.
I think if you watched that video and can ask that question you missed the point of the movie.
Humanity is imperfect. It is that imperfection that causes leaps in our evolution. It is a necessary component. Humans without humanity cannot strive, cannot dream, cannot hope, cannot learn.
We are a messy and silly species but we have incredible potential for good. It is our humanity that grants us that ability.
sounds like a religion to me that insights war but without drugs
I think the movie pretty much points out that this is just not something humans should do. Also highest kill count in any movie (of that time). I have it on DVD. - I appreciate all the things they point out as triggering emotion - I like having emotions. I can't imagine life without them.
Good movie.
What you're asking is whether we should not be John Preston? But John Preston is the hero! Who doesn't want to have the same Gunkata skills as John Preston?
Anyway, I say, no. You can decide NOT to do what your emotions dictate without hindering, ignoring or suppressing your emotions. It's the definition of being a responsible adult.
No, never. Emotion is what makes life worth living. It's running to your mom with your first scraped knee, knowing she will make it better. Your first day of school. Your first kiss. Your first break up. Your wedding day, the birth of your children, lying in the grass with the person you love. Emotion is the colors of life.
Without emotion...how could I hate that Christian Bale? heh heh
