Should There be a Columbus Day? Since last Columbus Day, I have heard bad things about Christopher Columbus concerning torture and genocide of indigenous people of Hispaniola. It makes me wonder if there should be a Columbus Day. What do you think?
No. another fake holiday that covers up the truth of history
We celebrate the discovery of America, not the man. What about Christmas... No god, no Santa clause... What about thanksgiving.... Pilgrims treated Indians horrifically...
No, I too think to get rid of it and give people a day off to vote on Nov. 6th, 2018. Some people can not get away from work.
The best idea I've heard is to remove it as a national holiday and replace it with Election Day. It's far important to provide a more convenient voting experience than it is to celebrate just one of many important historical events. The fact that colonialism and imperialism were devastating to indigenous people is also a strong factor in recommending that the federal status of the holiday should be revoked.
This has only an indirect connection to Columbus Day as (in the next day's strip) we find that Huey's decision on what book to bring to class is his teacher's "stirring tribute to Christopher Columbus" in the Boondocks comic strip. Here's a link to the strip via someone's blog post: [missmokushiroku.tumblr.com]
Columbus murdered and enslaved and stole food supplies, much needed, from the Native people. He also set off a wave of events bringing European conquest and disease (responsible for upwards of 95% death of indigenous peoples and remember estimates of population when Columbus arrived were 20 million or more)
I agree that it should be changed to Indigenous People’s Day.
Our city council changed the name to 'Indigenous Peoples' Day'.
Hey listen up folks......for many of us Columbus Day is a paid holiday. Be careful for your vote.
And how many Americans know its actual date? Or Lincoln's or Washington's birthdates? Then again what do dates matter in the land of Nod where climate change is a Chinese hoax, the Earth and Universe are only 10K old, and Jesus was born on December 25, absolutely, without a doubt, even if Roman taxes weren't collected at that time if year.
Heard similar. If true then it's a national disgrace. But so much this country does is disgraceful.
I don't celebrate it. I know "Pilgrims and Indians" bunk. The indigenous tribe that taught pilgrims to survive by eating fish and crustaceans are died out. Overgeneration make people wrong almost every time. I do not take part in the disgrace, almost 50% of the population is sickened and disgusted my our own president. [time.com]
@alanalorie they usually are. Enough hated every former president we've had. Nothing new.
@Deanervin I di not understand what you mean by "they usually are." Could you explain more?
@alanalorie the people, a large enough portion anyway, usually are disgusted with the sitting president. Regardless of who or when, in my experience.
FTP. Seriously.
I am a generation above you. Can you share what FTP means? I do not think it means File Transfer Protocol as I know it to mean.
@alanalorie F*** That Puto/a
@Nichole765 Thanks, if a person askes they can learn something new daily.

Native American reservations in North Dakota (and more?) did the same.
