Time for a supermarket rant... Why do they hate on the single people who live alone? Some things you can buy in bulk, some things you can't. Living alone, I'm constantly facing food spoilage and it's annoying and wasteful. They need a bigger variety in sizes. ?

You need a Foodsaver vacuum my friend! You will love it! I prep meals for an army, vac it, freeze it and BEHOLD... A home cooked meal in 10 minutes if I don't feel like cooking. You can also store other stuff, cheese, etc.

My favorite supermarket story was told by George Carlin.... Take stuff out of other people's carts... When they look at you strangely or say something about it... Explain that they haven't paid for it yet so it still "belongs to all of us!"

I've wondered about those. I have a friend that swears by them. I have grandkids in and out so most food is eaten but the weird stuff I like either gets wasted or I don't buy it due to probable waste.

I have lived on my own for almost eight years since my husband died and I very rarely have any food wastage. When I buy meat I either portion it up into individual portions and freeze the surplus portions or cook it and then do the same. We can still get loose vegetables at some supermarkets here, or if not I buy the smallest packs which if bought fresh will last several days in the fridge. Planning menus and buying accordingly reduces waste....eggs come already individually packaged and can be turned into quick meals for one. Fruit too comes in individual portions and also yoghurts. It did take a while for me to stop overbuying food as I was used to shopping and cooking for two or more, but now I have got it perfected.

I always bought bulk from an organic health food coop, when I lived in Morehead, KY. A sack of spring wheat berries or organic rolled oats would last a year. Tubs of organic peanut butter or almond butter don't spoil, and you can freeze food into smaller portions after cooking a big batch of it.

My food costs were very low, and I grew my own fresh herbs and vegetables in the summer.

@Delaroux Milk? Maybe buy cheese instead and freeze it.

There is long-standing enigma that hip fracture rates are highest in populations with the greatest milk consumption.

Babies are often born without enzymes needed to detoxify galactose found in milk; so, they end up with elevated levels of galactose in their blood, which can cause bone loss even as kids. Swedish researchers found that even in people who can detoxify galactose, it might not be good for the bones to be drinking it every day.

And galactose doesn’t just hurt the bones...it causes premature aging in lab animals—it can shorten their lifespan, cause oxidative stress, inflammation, and brain degeneration—just with one to two glasses of milk’s worth of galactose a day.

A hundred thousand men and women were followed for up to 20 years. Researchers found that milk-drinking women had higher rates of death, more heart disease, and significantly more cancer for each glass of milk. Three glasses a day was associated with nearly twice the risk of premature death, and they had significantly more bone and hip fractures. More milk, more fractures.

You can break off as much produce (like broccoli, etc) as you want.

Some things are sold as a bunch and there isn’t a price break if you have a half bunch of broccoli

I agree, and the servings for one are a lot more expensive than buying the family size.

Very true. Try getting the butcher to cut down and give a lower weight. Or see how exasperated the deli workers get when you order six items of six slices each.

How about restaurants when you ask for a table for one, that surprised pity look.
