I had a brother in law that always held his love and approval for his kids just out of reach. Pretty much destroyed them. Thoughts about this type of parenting?

Children learn from their parents, what he has done by not showing affection,is create more of his behavior in his Sons, almost, cold and indifferent,I see divorces in their futures if they marry.

That's not parenting, that's child abuse.

This runs in my family although after I was an adult I realized my father showed love in non traditional ways. He died when I was 30 so that revelation didnt aid my relationship with him.

It did however make me face the fact that I was quite similar to him in that respect so was better with my children. Better still with the grandchildren

That is not uncommon. I cannot ever remembering my mother ever saying she loved me or in any kind of way appreciated me. It was always negativity in our house.
