Today my job had a company wide meeting telling us that 200 people were getting laid off immediately. They said go to your desk and wait for a call from your supervisor. I can not even explain how tense that next hour was, seeing your coworkers getting walked out and waiting for your phone to ring. I am so angry at how they went about it. The lay offs are not over, either. More by the end of the year.
Have you experienced anything like this?
Yep, happened to me with two previous companies, though I personally was not laid off. Yet managements expect you to give two weeks or more notice if you resign. Right.
Right??
I’m not sure how they went about it is legal. It’s my understanding that a lay-off of that size requires 60 days notice. Otherwise, what happened is cruel and ethically bankrupt.
I agree with you about the ethically bankrupt part, but if it’s a “fire at will state,” with that legislation in place, they can fire you at any time without notice or reason, and there’s no recourse. ??
Maybe because it didn't affect more than 33%, as the article states.
@TDSkully sadly, the avg worker was like the frog in the water slowly brought to a boil. by the time they figured out what was really going on it was too late. now they're pretty well fucked.
unlike the working class in europe who refused to acquiesce while their rights & dignity were
stripped away.
@callmedubious not any reason this can’t be reported to the Labor Department to determine if it was handled properly.
Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear this. I have been laid off 2 times so far in my career. Both times the morale of the entire company was affected very negatively. For weeks, people were huddled, talking about who was next and fuming over who was already let go. Both companies are still prospering so it's likely this will be the way things continue to operate. The good news is, it's a recoverable situation for employees and it's easy to explain to potential employers that you were laid off.
You might want to check out any benefits you can get through your city/state due to a layoff. Some offer funds for education and you'll certainly be entitled to unemployment. If you're not let go, you may want to consider looking for something else because in my experience the fallout from layoffs lasts quite awhile and it's no better for the people left to pick up the pieces. Best of luck! You'll be fine either way!!
I was lucky to not be one of the layoffs!
I had to train my replacements when I worked at a fortune 500 company.. They offered me another job at 1/2 my pay rate. I turned that down. 6 months later that department came in to boxes & pink slips...on Valentines day. That made front page news. They eventually went bankrupt.
When a company overextends its typically leadership that creates that scenario. If your leadership is doing things like that then they're not very good at their jobs and that will unfortunately often be apparent in their handling of any situation, layoffs included.
That is completely heartless. They are cowards for firing people by phone. I would be so angry.
I am very sorry to read this honey ? Don't even wait or let this get u down . Prepare self just in case and u don't want to work for an employer that is so heartless anyways . Keep mind clear , mouth shut at work , and prepare self . Best of luck . U can do this .
That sucks. What kind of work were they doing?
Yes, twice! But we didn't get the meeting either time. The first time, I made it through two previous rounds of layoffs then got called in on the third round. They offered me an extra 30 days if I'd go to Mexico City to train my replacement. I jumped at the chance! I hadn't ever been there before. Second time, I was one of the lucky ones. I got a 90 day notice instead of being walked out of the building. Plus freedom to work with a placement service and attend classes or interviews as often as needed. I was surprised both times but felt I was treated fairly. Still hard to deal with though.
Not an immediate layoff, but due to the size of the company,we got 60 day notices, giving us time to apply for jobs elsewhere. This was doing aerospace work in San Diego Ca.
Notice is nice!
"Laid off immediately" nice way of saying "fucked immediately"
That's true!
No. I work in education. It doesn’t work like that.
You are wrong! Perhaps for your school or district but to assert "work in education" is homogeneously different then the story is not an accurate depiction of reality.
I also work in education and have 1st hand seen many teachers, principles, etc. be shown the door. (escorted off campus by security, or told at the end of the day never to return. etc.
My favorite story was by an old friend (Rick) who had his PHD in education and was working in administration for a large school district. While in a meeting he was told to "find (document) problems with 40 teachers so we can fire them. " He told the administrators to "Fuck off and die" That was his last day in that profession.
@NoMagicCookie
Well, you can have your contract non-renewed, but out and out dismissal for contracted personnel doesn’t happen unless you’ve violated your contract. Hourly personnel are another matter.
No school district would put itself in a position where it could be easily sued with cause. They typically hire counsel to make such decisions.
But that’s in Texas.
@Gatovicolo LOL! Seriously? There you go again incorrectly asserting that all in the educational industry have contracts. Face and Palm.
@NoMagicCookie
I have very little patience for surly people with questionable intelligence. Go bother someone else.
@Gatovicolo LOL. So by stating facts that do not agree with your incorrect assertion I am surly and have questionable intelligence. Looks like you are displaying a level of psychological projection.
What industry are you in? There may be other businesses affected.
It started with a merger of 2 companies. Ours wasn't doing as well
Yes.... It's a though pill to swallow. It's not the worst deal since there are jobs out there right now. The best thing you can do is to turn the page, move on emotionally as quickly as possible and start looking for your next job very agressively. Every interview from that point going forward is a step in the right direction. Focus and keep pressing relentlessly
There are minimum wage jobs. Not much else.
@CommonHuman I respectfully disagree. I landed a very good job and I had to pick this one up over other three excellent offers.
I know it's hard right now, but you will find a way to survive. Even if you get laid off, you still have your skills and will find another job, probably an wven better job as you have gained more skills since you began working in your current job. Or you may be able to get additional training to find a completely different job. Layoffs definitely force us out of our comfort zone but that can be a good thing. Good luck and keep smiling!?
That is just fucking inhumane. Who are these shitstains?
mostly republicans. they love hurting the little people......
