So I'm not sure if I'm in the right category, but I got an email inmy spam from someone saying they put malware on a site that I went on and that they knew my password (they did know an old one, but it was a stupid simple one so they could have just sayed that they new a password but didnt really). So anyway. The email said that if I don't pay this, person $6,000 theyll tell all my facebook friends I was on the site. I'm just wondering if I should worry or not.
its an old trick. but in future folks, never open emails in your spam filter, stay safe
It's just a scam. But unnerving nonetheless. I have gotten several of these forwarded from my deceased husband's email, and they do mention an actual password he had used. So they hacked something at some point. Possibly a porn site? But you don't have to send money. That would probably be the worst thing to do. Never again using the password they have would be wise.
Sounds totally bogus as it they had your password, they would have specified the account site, Told you the password and user account for that site, changed your password, locked you out, downloaded the content from the site. Then demonstrated data from the site before attempting to blackmail you.
Hope you didn't worry to much.
Side note: I teach students to use phrases to make up and remember passwords: For example: The Sunset, After a Strom, is too lovely for words. = TS,aaS,i2l4w
It's fake.. don't worry about it
