My folks have a cat like that. Turned out he’s Cheating on them with another family!

My neighbour's cat Fluffy (good neighbours but lacking in imagination) went missing one day. She was fairly old, about 12, and when she didn't return for a couple of weeks they assumed she was likely either dead or had gone off to live with someone who bought fresh salmon daily, as cats are sometimes won't to do.

Anyway, six years later, by which time they had two new cats, Fluffy walked in one day as though she'd never been away, strolled straight into the kitchen and stared at the corner where her bowl used to be with an expression on her face which was unmistakably the feline term for "well, where the fuck is my dinner?"

She needs a travel camera on her collar.

My cat Oscar often goes away for a day or two....no idea where to, but as I live in the middle of the county I suspect he visits one of the farms around where he probably has feline pals to hang out with. He is neutered or I would suspect a liaison!
