The president is elected once every four years.

Senators have to be elected every six years. We do not elect all senators at once, but stager the terms so abotu a third of them run every two years. Each state is represented by two senators.

The House of Representatives hve to be elected every two years. Every House member runs for office every two years years Representation is determined by population. Each ten years we have a census to determine curent population levels in each state, and the number of representatives from ech state depends on teh population of the previous census. Also district lines are drawn for ech representative for the local are they represent in their state. Lines are (supposedly) drawn so ech representative represents an relatively equal number of people.

So, we have elections for Federal offices every two years. We usually label them as a Presidential election or a mid term election. The mid term happens in the middle of the president's four year term of office. Thus the name "Mid Term".

All Americans are suposed o know all of this, but I am surprised at how few actually do.

there are governorships up for grabs/defending as well, and state and local posts ranging from judges to dogcatchers to state senators to whatever. it's not just federal. we have 50 states with a whole lot of government going on (or round and round) in them too.

To be honest, it's more or less a referendum on Donald Trump. It's America's chance to answer the question of whether 2016 was an accident, a fluke or we really meant to fill in that bubble next to a reality TV star.
