Don't thank me for my service

I typically ask business if they give discounts to disabled veterans and regardless their policy, the cashier will often say, "Thank you for your service."

First - I typically want to tell them you should spit in my face for supporting a government that routinely takes action both domestically and in foreign policy to undermine democracy and freedoms.

Second - I want to ask them do they know their city, county, state, or national representatives, any of the pending legislations being currently debated, or have they written their reps about ANY topic they find important recently. Voting in a popularity contest every two years, then sitting on your ass so someone else can think for you isn't honoring those that have served, suffered, or died.

My question - how can I convey this without sounding like a bitter, judgmental asshole? My goal is to get people to stop being so apathetic and lazy, and start taking a more active role in directing their government and informing themselves of what's going on in the world.

Thank you for the responses so far. Again, my goal is to not be rude to those people, but to challenge their appreciation and involvement in the democracy they enjoy. I have thought about typing up a small paragraph, or getting business cards made up to hand to them....that way it might not come off as an attack, but more of a personal challenge.

This actually sounds like a good way to handle it. The cards would mist likely be read if you handed it to them and say something simple like "I appreciate your support. When you get a minute maybe you could give that a read. It speaks for me and a lot of my fellow servicemen. Have a nice day."

Yes, it is a tricky one. I think asking questions in a non threatening way is the best way to get people thinking, even thought the feeling is that one wants to hit them over the head for not paying attention to what is really going on. At the moment we have a 100 year celebration of world war here in Australia and I just want to scream. No, I don't want to thank the soldiers who gave their lives or soldiers who came home broken, I want to scream about all those leaders who just use people as cannot fodder for their own profit.
