Do you think we ought consider a re-write of the Ten Commandments specifically for the Third Millennium?
Further Thoughts
How could our group create a group of suitable authors, including spirituality types to work on it?
The trouble with commandments is that they assume the existence of a commander, one who gives orders and beats the holy hell out of anyone who dares disobey.
Jesus came along and seemed to imply that the first two commandments were the most important because all the others were based on those two. But the first two commandments order us to love. How can you command someone to love? Love has to be spontaneous. Love comes automatically when you become aware of beauty and value. There’s not much point in ordering someone to become aware—if they aren’t aware they probably don’t know where to begin or what it is they are supposed to become aware of.
I propose that the Ten Commandments be reduced to just one: MEDITATE.
I think we could throw out the half of them having to do with worshiping god. and then update the rest to make sense, as in coveting thy neighbor's wife and goats.
You can have his wife. I’d sort of like to have the goats.
why? we have laws. why can't we concentrate on electing people to make good laws, and on enforcing them humanely, and getting rid of bad, unfair laws, and freeing people unfairly incarcerated because of bad laws, instead of writing "commandments," which term sounds as if it comes from a deity, and why 10, such an arbitrary number? i wouldn't bother. as for spirituality... no thanks. to me, that's religion light.

p.s. speaking of arbitrary, the 10 commandments are kind of a christian thing. jews have 613 of them. are we going to turn everyone into new christians? again, no thanks!
