Considering that unlike in my youth, the U.S. does NOT have the highest standard of living, the fewest per capita homeless, free college education, a high minimum wage, a low infant mortality, the lowest suicide rate, the lowest rate of death of birth mothers, the lowest pharmaceuticals, lowest rate of incarceration, what is it that makes the U.S.A. the "greatest country in the world"?
Saying any country is the greatest in the world is propaganda pure and simple. We are raised to believe this.
I admit I believed this without even really realizing it until I reconnected with our family in Europe in 2000. In many ways their little country of 2 million is far superior to ours. We witnessed a sense of community that doesn't exist here anymore. People care that their neighbors have opportunities for housing, education, and healthcare. Going to the open air market was phenomenal, I've never experienced community like that before. People know everyone and know where their food comes from. Even today in this small country, Slovenia, anyone from around the World can go to college here free and they have 100 classes taught in English. They love diversity and want their students to learn about the world, what better way than to invite people to join them. They also offer free college for retired people, always looking to better themselves. They aren't super wealthy nor is anyone super poor. They have some worldwide companies there. I may retire there someday.
Yes...Slovenia is one of the countries with a higher standard of living than the U.S. Also, I agree, stating that one's country is the greatest/best not only is not usually accurate but is influenced by the country's propaganda...Pledge of Allegiance, singing the National Anthem at sporting events, etc. The Germans used the same strategies, like suggesting God is on their side ("Gott Mit Uns" God is With Us on their belt buckles), as "...under God..." has been included in the Pledge of Allegiance.
