What's your favourite movie soundtrack/score album?

I'm a big fan of big band/swing/standard so it just follows then that the soundtracks to the films 'What Women Want' and 'A Royal Night Out' top my short list. You lot can list as many soundtrack CDs as you like. Here's mine (all from the 90s and onwards):

  1. What Women Want (1999)
  2. A Royal Night Out (2015)
  3. For the Boys (1992) (I'm a huge Bette Midler fan)
  4. Beauty and the Beast (1991)
  5. One Fine Day (1995)
  6. That Thing You Do! (1996)
  7. The American President (1995)
  8. Woman on Top (2000) (for bossanova lovers at heart)
  9. Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
  10. The Cider House Rules (1999)
  11. Sideways (2004)
  12. El Cantante (2006) (for salsa lovers)

"Rumble Fish" (1983)

If it's not cheating to list musicals that were made into movies, "West Side Story" is my favorite, followed by "Chicago." Too many good ones to list in this genre.

I like most of Ennio Morricone's scores, but my favorite is for "Once Upon a Time in America." "Gabriel's Oboe" from "The Mission" is one of his most lovely songs.

The theme for the "Mission Impossible" movies was adapted from the TV series, which is my favorite TV show theme by Lalo Schifrin.

I was impressed with the music and the movie, "Broken Circle Breakdown" featuring a Flemish / Belgian Bluegrass band. Yes, really. Excellent. BTW, a main character is an outspoken atheist, and the scene of him ranting on God is superb and heartrending.

I could write about music for hours, but I'll stop here.

Gladiator had a great one.
The colaboration of Hanns Zimmer, and Lisa Gerrard was amazing.
They had so many pieces with such feeling and depth.
If I remember they won an Oscar for it.
here are a couple of examples.

I checked out Dead Can Dance (Lisa Gerrard) because of this sound track.

@JimmyJimbo Big fan of them too. "the lotus eaters" is one of my favorite songs of theirs.

Stubbs the Zombie, a lot of really nice covers of songs like Earth Angel and My Boyfriend's Back and Strangers in the Night by artists like Dashboard Confessional, The Raveonettes, and Cake.

The first Underworld soundtrack was, if I recall, a pretty small project headed up largely by Wes Borland and Maynard, Milla Jovovich has a nice song on there.

Beetlejuice. Love me some early Danny Elfman and Harry Belafonte.

Stay Tuned, pretty nice showcase of early nineties underrated rap with a Salt N Pepa track towards the end.

The Highlander soundtrack, which is basically the Queen album A Kind of Magic. For that matter, the Flash Gordon soundtrack.

Mirrormask, done largely by Iain Bellamy. Theres a cover of Close to You where a woman sings four part harmony with herself.

The first Shrek.
The Lion King
Rocky Horror Picture Show
And its sequel, Shock Treatment.
Rent (the Broadway cast)
Requiem for a Dream, done by the Kronos Quartet
Fight Club, done by the Dust Brothers
The DiCaprio/Danes Romeo and Juliet
The first Matrix
The Animatrix
The awful Spawn film had a pretty nice soundtrack.
The Bob's Burgers Music Album
The Last Werewolf (soundtrack for a book.)
Stigmata, believe it or not.
End of Days wasn't half bad.
10 Things I Hate About You
Speaking of Danny Elfman, Sleepy Hollow...

I could keep going but I'll stop now 🙂

I like the orchestral ones. Thomas Newman's stuff from the 90s is especially good; Fried Green Tomatoes, How to Make an American Quilt, The Horse Whisperer, Oscar and Lucinda. I love James Horner's Braveheart and Glory. Other favorites, The English Patient has done beautiful clarinet stuff. So much pretty!

Pulp Fiction, The Last of the Mohicans (1992), Departures (Okuribito)

@GeorgeRocheleau oh how did I forget Departures (Okuribito), a most memorable utterly engrossing movie indeed. Joe Hisaishi's music is transportive, haunting and simply beautiful, a sublime listening experience. Thank you.

@jemzet8

Not only is the music beautiful, but it is a perfect match for one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen.
