I heard the idea here about starting our own political party? why don't we do that?
... edited to say.. I just thought it was an interesting idea.. not saying I am trying to put an actual party together ..
Atheist Party? While it is intriguing (especially if it involves kegs and dance music), atheism isn't exactly a political platform. It's like if we were to start, say, Sanity Party....
Wait.
Oh.. I think you found our name for the party!!
If we’re talking the USA, it’s because our government’s become a binary winner-take-all system in which minor parties have no influence … other than robbing one of the two of victory.. I’m thinking our founding fathers decision to avoid a parliamentary system wasn’t the brilliant move it’s been touted..
Not saying we non-religious shouldn’t organize in order to influence the major parties, mainly in the primaries - or to scare the shit out of the far wrong ... but as far as creating a separate party, sadly not ~
I agree that we desperately need a Third Party. However, the system is set up in favor of the two-party variety. And the electorate has been brainwashed into thinking that voting for a third-party candidate is a wasted vote.
I'm not sure that systems with multiple political parties work any better than our awful two-party system. Your idea that voters have been "brainwashed into thinking that voting for a third-party candidate is a wasted vote" makes little sense when you consider that third-party candidates never win, though their votes along with the non-votes may cost someone else the election. I wonder if the Green and Libertarian party voters along with the non-voters are happy with Trump?
@Shouldbefishing I'm pretty sure that 6% of the vote won't win any elections, so yes, I'd say they (and presumably you) wasted your vote and may have given us Trump instead.
Personal story and from Canada so things are a bit different.
I one time wasted my vote on the Green Party.
It was a new party and I decided I wanted to check them out, as I was not impressed with either of the major parties doing enough about our environment. I was already hearing about climate change (being a science geek etc) before it was well known.
So I paid my membership and voted for them. My candidate in my area didn't even get close (less then 5 percent) , but across Canada there was an impressive amount of votes.
one candidate did get in!
in the long run they only had a small percentage of the votes , but after that you could see the two major political parties made some major changes to their "green" policies and all of them did go more green.
I don't think our votes were wasted that year..
I wouldn't vote for them now.. but I think they are a great example of how a small movement can have large effects.
Any political party that would effect change would need to be grassroots, driven by workers, not corporations. We need a Worker’s Party.
Workers party sounds socialist which I think scares most Americans lol..
Better way to say it is democracy that is free from corporate intervention..
IE: the PACS and super PACS in America are a huge problem for democracy in America.. (Canada to a much lesser extent)
I think this is a noble idea. What would be the platform? What are the unifying principles?
What can we all agree on.? start with that..
Can I assume all of us at least agree that democracy , freedom of the press, Equality , etc are good things?
start at the basics..
we already have a basic guideline

I’m not sure what an athiest/agnostic party would offer beyond what is already available.
I'm from Canada, so it's a little different here.. fringe parties are not super unusual..
But even in America I have noticed things seem to be more extreme.. no one is looking at the moderates as it's own block.. I guess it would give people something more specific to vote for rather then taking the "other " with the major parties..
