Sherlock Holmes once said if you eliminate the impossible whatever is left however improbable must be the truth. If you look at and feel the meaning in those words they can be used to describe everyday life. As most people think that most things are impossible I prefer to think that they are jist marginally improbable. But never impossible. What's your feeling on this.?
Careful now, my Friend, that self-same statement COULD easily be applied by any number of Theosophers ( Theologians) to ratify their God Theosophy ( Theology) ergo, it may just come back to bite you where the sun does not ever shine upon.
@darien75 ANY idea of the existence of a Supreme, Omnipotent Deity/Deities is pure and unadulterated Bunkum to say the least.
However, there are those 'Faithfools' out there who will grasp at any 'straw' within reach and turn it to their assumed advantage, no matter how incredulous it may be seem or be.
Some things are simply impossible. The laws of physics can not be violated
BUT, aren't those very LAWS the same laws made up by man?
Where, exactly, in the Universe ARE those laws written for ALL to see?
@Triphid They weren't created by man. Mankind discovered and will continue to discover the laws of physics that were and are there already. The writing humans do with the laws of physics is simply transcribing them.
@FatherOfNyx How can anyone transcribe something that is not written in the first place?
Man can MERELY observe and POSIT a reason, i.e. CREATE in his mind that x must equal y simply because to him it is logical for that to occur.
Can you see the point I am making here?
We are EXPECTED to believe there is a God simply because ages past someone deemed, logically to his/her mind/understanding THAT a God MUST exist therefore there is a God.
Cannot the same simply be said about the Laws of Physics, etc, since man, himself, has deemed in his/her own mind that THEY must exist ergo the DO exist?
@Triphid No, because the laws of physics and God are 2 very different things. When we discover a law, it gets continually tested.. both directly and indirectly. If it fails a test, then we know that the way we transcribed it is incorrect. If it doesn't fail a test, then we know that we transcribed the law correctly until proven otherwise. The laws that we have don't really fail, and that is because they've always been there, waiting for us to discover.
It's very much like mathematics. We don't create mathematics, we discover it. That's why they nickname it the language of the universe. We know other animals use basic math, supposedly even ants count steps. Just like with the laws of physics, mankind doesn't create math.. only creates a label, translates. When it comes to math, you and I saying 'two' is no different than a German saying 'zwei' which is no different than an ape vocalizing and making a gesture for 'two' which is no than the neural and chemical processes of an ant's brain signifying what we call 'two'.
The laws of physics are not like God, they are like mathematics. God stands waaaay apart from the two because the concept puts it itself outside the realm of testing, and would fail if were ever properly tested. I think it's safe to say that God was never really always there like the laws of physics are.
@darien75 "Proof monkey"," loons", "numpties" are examples of name-calling, which resides in the lowest level of the Hierarchy of Disagreement. Successful argumentation is accomplished by providing facts to support a hypothesis. If one consults the accompanying chart, one can note several logical fallacies to avoid.
Sounds like a nice plot for a good book but in realty, most events have multiple possible causes. Not all possible causes can be tested.
